When ads came on for the NBC show This Is Us in early fall, I was really excited to watch. It was an interesting premise and I thought it was going to be really good.

And then I saw it. Call me cynical, but I thought it was some cliche, overly sentimental crap. The characters were annoying and the plots were predictable. It felt like the show was desperately trying to get me to go “aw” at every waking moment. I didn’t like it at all. And so, after two episodes, I stopped watching.

However, after the Christmas break ended, I was pulled back into watching by my sister who wanted me to watch with her, and so now I keep up every week. However, I still loathe it’s very existence to its day. I usually just end up getting mad at all the characters for all the bullshit that they pull, and I don’t think that’s the shows intention. It seriously makes me want to throw things at the TV.

But I can’t help noticing that critics like it. And viewers like it, too. So is there something I’m missing? Is This is Us a good show? And what chance does it stand come Emmy season? I’m curious to hear people’s thoughts.

It’s an okay show with awards worthy acting in my opinion but the show itself should not be nominated for best drama series. The writing can also be very good in my opinion.

Expected to hate it but LOVE THE SHOW. It’s a bit sentimental but it doesn’t hold back on the emotions that’s for sure.

I only saw the pilot and found it nothing special. A nice, warm show but offering little that I couldn’t find elsewhere.

I normally hate lightweight shows like this, but I can’t stop watching it for some reason. Maybe I’ve watched so much heavy shit like GoT, Westworld and Banshee that I need a break. It is escapism for me.

The show is stellar, and I see it being a major Emmy player this cycle.

I can see why some people would dislike this show, but the language you describe in your distaste of the show points to some deeper issues. People on this website have a tendency of letting their distaste for certain shows make them very angry, bitter people. It’s just a TV show.

The show is not ‘stellar’. For it to be stellar I think it needs to at least offer something new (why I don’t think Stranger Things for example is top tier). It executes what it sets out to do very well and the acting is uniformly good, but it’s a limited show that has been done before.

It’s stellar to me. Your mileage may very, which is irrelevant to my enjoyment or appreciation of the work in question.

Sans the atrocious Justin Hartley, I think it’s a reasonably decent show. I would probably only Emmy-nominate Sterling K. Brown, though. And maybe Milo Ventimiglia.

However, I will say the Sterling K Brown/Father story is severely lacking and is being played as simple tearjerker fodder. In other words: it’s boring as Fuuu..dge.

Someone clearly didn’t watch this week’s episode.

I thought this too, Ralph, until this week’s episode! Jones’s acting in particular has felt forced and actorly in stretches like he’s on another series at times. Not sure if you’ve seen “Memphis” or not, but the Randall/William storyline reaches a stunning climax there. The cousin subplot was troubling though. Like, you’ve never heard of transportation? What was stopping you from going to Pittsburgh? Did he not attend his own aunt’s funeral? Anyways, we have to beat the drum loudly for this show at the Emmys! Tell us all you can about its campaign!

Stellar gets banded about way too much in describing good shows. I loved Westworld but wouldn’t describe it as stellar. TV in general is at all time high levels of quality. Either about 30 shows are stellar, or we have to be more conservative in labelling everything as amazing.

I absolutely love the and look forward to it every week. Milo and Sterling are incredible and I think the show 100% deserves a nomination.
