First trailer of the show below:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CI5_8qlH1P7/

Apparently this one is a HBO Max co-production (rather than an import like I Hate Suzie) from Russell T. Davies (Doctor Who, A Very English Scandal, Years and Years).

This is the description of the show according to Deadline:

Starring Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander, It’s A Sin explores friendship and love during the 1980s AIDS crisis through the eyes of three young gay men as they embark on a new life in London. As the decade passes, and they grow up in the shadow of AIDS, they’re determined to live and love more fiercely than ever.

The cast also includes Bodyguard star Keeley Hawes, Neil Patrick Harris, and Stephen Fry. The series was originally titled Boys.

What do you guys think of the trailer?

FYC Emmys: "The Crown" in all categories, "I May Destroy You" in all categories, "It's a Sin" in all categories, "Small Axe" in all categories, Billie Piper ("I Hate Suzie"), Yvonne Strahovski ("Stateless") and Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials")

Olly Alexander wasn’t a popstar I was expecting to transition into acting but here for it.

Great idea for a show horrible title

It was originally titled “Boys” but assumed it changed due to the similarly titled Amazon show.

I’m assuming the current title is in reference to the Pet Shop Boys song about the AIDS epidemic.

(Ironically, the same Pet Shop Boys who collaborated with lead actor Olly’s band Years and Years last year, whose band name is also the title of showrunner Davies’ last BBC/HBO miniseries.)

Unafraid to reference or not reference.

Emmys FYC | Alan Tudyk in “Resident Alien” | Billie Piper in “I Hate Suzie” | Ego Nwodim in “Saturday Night Live” | Kaley Cuoco in “Harley Quinn” | “Dickinson” | “P-Valley” | “Pose” | “Superstore”

I think it looks good and I will definitely be watching. Love how they used Pet Shop Boys in the trailer.

Any idea when this will be coming to HBO Max? I know it’s coming out in the UK this month, but I haven’t heard about Max.

Just wondering because sometimes shows are on both around the same time like “His Dark Materials” and sometimes you have to wait a bit like with “I hate Suzie.”

British TV blogger Elliot Gonzalez tweeted this about the series:

“TRUST ME when I tell you that #ItsASin is an incredible 5 hours of television. And one you are not going to want to miss. I’m lucky enough to have already seen it and WOW… I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. This is absolutely Russell T Davies at his best.”

Early contender for the 2022 BAFTAs?

I think Olly looks great in this, as does the show overall. I met him at his album launch party a few years back too and he was genuinely lovely. No relevance to the show, but it makes me root for him if the performance is also there!

Neil Patrick Harris really said I’m going to shame all the other people in the supporting actor category and I only need one episode to do so. Perhaps one of the only examples this season of a performance that I have found so riveting from the moment he appeared on screen.

Russell’s unique and distinctive writing is on top form as always. Whilst I am not sure how the rest of the show will play out I am already preferring the opener of this to the openers of A Very English Scandal and Years and Years (and if you’ve seen me on this site you’ll know how much I raved about those shows lol).

Episode 1
Grade: A+
MVP: Neil Patrick Harris

FYC Emmys: "The Crown" in all categories, "I May Destroy You" in all categories, "It's a Sin" in all categories, "Small Axe" in all categories, Billie Piper ("I Hate Suzie"), Yvonne Strahovski ("Stateless") and Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials")

I don’t have patience, so I watched this on my go to website for uk shows, and I thought the first episode was great. I haven’t had a first episode that sucked me in like this in a long time. It’s usually me being distracted and then telling myself to keep watching because everyone is praising the show. At the end of this I was surprised it was over already because it went by so fast.

Is NPH going to be in a weak category? He was pretty good, and I can see him getting a nomination. He didn’t blow me away enough to be a shoe-in, but he was good. I liked the Colin kid the best of the group so far.

Based on the reviews, I’d say Lydia and Keeley are the ones with a chance for Bafta nominations. I think it’ll be lead Lydia and supporting Keeley. I’ll have to wait and see this 5th episode Keeley performance people are talking about. Maybe if the show is a huge success here they both can break through for the Emmys.

It’s on the European hbo apps, so I suspect they’re holding it off for the awards. Maybe so it’ll be fresh in voters memories and get a lot of votes? Could just be advertising reasons. I don’t know how these decisions are made.

I’ve seen it all and I’m a little bit broken after that.

Compelling, angering, full of life, moving and just so so devastating. The ensemble are all sensational. Russel T Davis’ use of largely unknown actors draws you in even more to the injustice of what happened, while his writing is note perfect.

I feel like I should change the name of this thread. To dub it only as “an AIDS drama” feels so degrading to it. Any suggestions?

I’d simply go with ‘It’s A Sin Thread’.

It’s way more than an ‘AIDS drama’.

It’s the one show/film ‘about’ AIDS that shows how those who died from this injustice had such full, fun and vibrant lives before the diagnosis. And they had even more ahead of them before all their lives were cut so tragically short.

Pre-diagnosis, they were able to live the lives they’d been too scared to live, or just unable to live, for years.

Episode 2 was dynamite. Lydia West and Olly Alexander were fire and the direction made the episode so tense yet cheery, over the top and escapist too.
