So Kevin Spacey is now never going to win an Emmy for Frank Underwood, though he could still receive a nomination next year for Outstanding Special Class Program as host of this year’s Tony Awards. Every single Tony telecast since 2006 has at least been nominated in that category.
Realistically speaking (because I would like for you all to leave your personal thoughts on this year’s Tonys out of this, given its mixed response), could you see some TV Academy members snubbing this year’s telecast because of Spacey’s current scandals?November 4, 2017 at 6:00 am #1202401660
Scandal aside, they should snub Spacey just because he was a wretched host. I think the show itself will still be nominated but the flat Hello, Dolly! number and lack of any real zing in the performances will do it in when voting for a winner.November 4, 2017 at 6:01 am #1202401661
He will never get nominated for anything again, believe me. Rightfully so.November 4, 2017 at 6:32 am #1202401671
I think Tony’s should do the right thing and not submit themselves for this year.November 4, 2017 at 6:40 am #1202401676
And to think that he has 6 Emmy nominations for acting, including 5 consecutive for “House of Cards” and he never won. If he would, he would get Triple Crown of Acting. That was close! We owe Paul Giamatti, Jeff Daniels, Bryan Cranston, Jon Hamm, Rami Malek and Sterling K. Brown, we really do!
I think Tonys’ production team should submit themselves. They didn’t do anything wrong (as far as we know) so they shouldn’t be punished for this.November 4, 2017 at 6:57 am #1202401698
I thought Spacey did a solid job as host of the Tonys. Sure, he wasn’t a Hugh Jackman, Neil Patrick Harris, nor James Corden, but I liked what he was able to do given that he was the 15th choice to host.
I think this year’s telecast will still be nominated for Outstanding Special Class Program since the Tonys have been nominated in that category every year since 2006, but the mixed response may prevent it from winning. We shall see how the upcoming live musical productions (A Christmas Story on FOX; Jesus Christ Superstar on NBC) as well as this year’s Academy Awards with Jimmy Kimmel returning as host stack up.November 4, 2017 at 9:17 am #1202401817
I expect the Tonys to be snubbed next year. Spacey was a shitty host, for starters, and the telecast itself was a middling one. Now voters will avoid nominating anything he’s even tangentially involved with, so needless to say, that’s it for him with “House of Cards,” “Gore,” “All the Money in the World,” etc.November 4, 2017 at 9:36 am #1202401824
All they have to do is announce that Spacey’s name won’t be submitted along with everybody else. Isn’t that simple enough? For the first time in years the Tonys will be submitted without the name of the host. That should clear the problem. Shitty or not, they will be nominated because it’s the Tonys at the Emmys.November 4, 2017 at 10:07 am #1202401842
Yeah, Spacey’s too toxic to win an Emmy at this point. Despite James Corden’s wonderful job of hosting the 2016 Tonys, I think this year’s Oscars should have won the Special Class Program. It’s time the Oscars won that category for a change because I honestly think in some years the Oscar ceremony was better than the Tony ceremony that would win the prize.November 4, 2017 at 10:32 am #1202401854
Yeah, it’ll sit out next year. It’s too bad b/c its decent enough to get in and worst Tony shows have won.November 4, 2017 at 12:32 pm #1202401991
When nominating, is the host’s name written on the ballot? If not, the Tonys could easily return. In the time of the voting, the new edition of the awards would be in the spotlight, with all the media towards the new host.November 4, 2017 at 12:35 pm #1202401995
He’ll never triple crown and he always assumed he would.November 4, 2017 at 6:08 pm #1202402219
I don’t think the Tonys should submit themselves next year, not because people who weren’t Spacey did anything wrong, but because the mixed reviews combined with Spacey’s scandals should be enough reason to not get it on the ballot so some lazy voters will name-check it. These people gave Margo Martindale 2 Emmys for CAMEOS not even a few minutes long at most! They have no “rock bottom,” just an abyss of LAZINESS!November 4, 2017 at 8:05 pm #1202402258

Let’s assume that voters know which installment of the Tonys they’re voting for, at least. If Spacey’s name isn’t on the nominating ballot, he’ll be on the final ballot. That’s what counts. If the show isn’t outright snubbed, which I think it will be, then it’ll just lose.
