Succession currently has two acclaimed performances competing against each other in Supporting Actor. Which one would you vote for?
I’m currently only predicting Culkin to get the nomination, but I’m personally rooting for Macfadyen. First of all, Culkin is phenomenal. It feels like a role that we see a lot, but he really makes the most of it, giving a flashy turn as the sarcastic scene stealer, and managing to find the humanity in an otherwise unlikable character. But I ended up being more drawn to Macfayden’s subtle, contained work. He does a good job of getting a lot of emotion across without being too obvious about it, which makes the moments where he gets to let loose hit even harder than they normally would. I was also very surprised at how much I ended up sympathizing with him as the season went on, more so than with Culkin. Both should make the cut, but if it’s only one of them, I hope it’s Macfadyen, even though I’m expecting the opposite to happen.

Macfadyen ftw.
ReplyCopy URLApril 12, 2020 at 10:46 am #1203422605Culkin really stepped it up this year, but Macfadyen is something else. Both for the nom, Macfadyen for the win.

This! I’m always more drawn to subtle, quieter performances but something about Pelphrey’s work really struck me. It felt so grounded even though it was super loud. I still think I prefer Macfadyen though, the cove scene with Shiv alone is brilliant.

Both Culkin and Macfadyen would’ve been better winners than Dinklage.
ReplyCopy URLApril 12, 2020 at 3:20 pm #1203423202I prefer Macfadyen who should have been nodded for both season, and was last year standout along with Jeremy Strong.
Culkin I think improved in season 2 and even if both are deserving Cox/Snook/Strong shined more than the suppoting guys.
ReplyCopy URLApril 12, 2020 at 10:38 pm #1203423661Macfadyen. Culkin has always been pretty one-note in his performance, especially the first season. It was absurd that he was the only one nominated by a major organization last year.
ReplyCopy URLApril 12, 2020 at 10:44 pm #1203423665Macfadyen at least got a Critics’ Choice nomination last season.
ReplyCopy URLApril 13, 2020 at 12:00 am #1203423719What’s gonna be funny is when it ends up being Nicholas Braun who gets the nomination
(would never predict this but would we really be surprised if Cousin Greg is the one who pulls through?)
ReplyCopy URLApril 13, 2020 at 7:16 am #1203424107Macfadyen was better than Culkin in both seasons.
Also, Macfadyen, Culkin and Braun deserved nominations last year and they would be on my nominations ballot this year.
