This is very much a series for fans of Fargo than a series for fans of Marvel. The Netflix shows are very stylized too, but they are a lot more accessible.
I read that Noah Hawley wrote it as taking place in the 2010s, but when they designed and shot it, they modeled it after the 1960s. That is cool.
I wonder what kind of main title sequence we are going to get next week. FX has a great track record getting title theme nominations. Or maybe we do not get any, seeing as this is from the guy behind Fargo. I like Rachel Keller so much better here than in Fargo.
This is not what the cinematographers’ branch goes for, but it is the same cinematographer who won last year for Fargo, so maybe? I would normally think that this would be a dark horse for editing, but it is coming out in the year of Stranger Things and Westworld, so the genre vote has higher priorities. Costumes is way too crowded. Ooh, production design has space though! House of Cards is dead weight, Game of Thrones is ineligible and Stranger Things and Westworld will be in the other category. It would be great if it could get a sound mixing nomination, given how crucial sound is to this show, but sound mixing tends to be just an Outstanding Drama Series copy. Note the four nominations for Downton Abbey. Sound editing is possible. Those nominations are decided by panel. Score is possible for Fargo‘s Jeff Russo. The visual effects sometimes looked (intentionally) cheap, but hey, it is television, so it should be able to get a nomination.February 10, 2017 at 2:58 am #1202007205
I really liked the pilot but don’t think this will be nominated for series. The four new shows (Stranger Things, Westworld, The Crown, This Is Us) seems like they are locked for that category. Though, the directing was great and seriously deserves a nomination. Aubrey Plaza can be strong contender if she becomes eligible for guest actress. Dan Stevens was great also. If he has better things to do in further episodes he will be a strong contender too. However, he is facing people like Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins, so I’m not quite sure.February 10, 2017 at 5:00 pm #1202007716This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.February 10, 2017 at 5:40 pm #1202007731
It was okay. I need to see more to really say. I do not think that it is getting nominated above the line. I think that we also need to factor in reverence for Noah Hawley to the Metacritic score, i.e. the 82 is probably inflated, like how Vinyl scored a 71 because of Martin Scorsese.February 15, 2017 at 8:36 am #1202012571
The pilot was good, though it was more like a prologue and we’ve still yet to see what kind of narrative the rest of the series will tend towards.
The presentation is extremely stylized, so I can see the critics going crazy for this.February 15, 2017 at 9:01 am #1202012592
I liked the pilot but doesn’t seem like a show that would be must see for me yet. Making my initial choices in the prediction center it really hurt to leave Legion off of every above the line category, especially Stevens – I just don’t think it has the juice to break through this year.
I hope, though, that it can do well in all the production categories. It really is stunning to watch.February 25, 2017 at 3:40 pm #1202022001
Three episodes in, I think Legion is not my cup of tea. I’m not enamored enough with the main character to want to spend hours in his brain learning what makes him tick.March 4, 2017 at 7:40 pm #1202029440This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.March 4, 2017 at 7:42 pm #1202029441This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.March 5, 2017 at 12:13 pm #1202029765
I love this show. I’m in the middle of the third episode right now and I think it’s amazing. Dan Stevens is incredible in it. I also am loving Jean Smart. But I’m surprised at how sweet the romance is on the show — it’s a nice touch.March 9, 2017 at 7:35 am #1202032842
Another solid A episode for me – this so is just crazy good.
Anyone else think it may get a surprise directing nod? I can’t think of a more flashily directed show and they have nominated Hawley’s direction over in limited series for Fargo.
I just worry that since FX will most likely be pushing The Americans, Feud, and Atlanta as their top dogs that this won’t get the campaign push it needs.
