Lmao that’s the most recent episode i’ve watched, with “Kourt” and Justin Bieber. The show is just simply amazing and enjoyable.

Having pretty much exhausted the limited/drama series categories, I’m going to give this a shot. I’ve been delaying it because I find his music utterly atrocious (even if it’s meant to be parody), but the reviews are too much to ignore.

    For Your Consideration:

Best International Feature: Instinct (The Netherlands)
Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)

I do not know what to do with that Kardashian take above, but anyway, I just want to say that I cannot get the directing of this show out of my head. The blurring of the shot when Dave raps that he will “smoke this beat” in the finale’s climax is just a masterful touch by Tony Yacenda, who previously demonstrated technical and naturalistic prowess with American Vandal. And that silent (other than the score) close to the sixth episode is just about the most beautiful and emotional sequence of the television season, although it ostensibly just Dave jumping on stage in slow motion. Too bad that they are not submitting director Andrew DeYoung. I just noticed that the Elz/Emma-centric episode was actually the fourth produced; I wish that I had asked Burd about burying it as the seventh to air, which was definitely the right call.

This show never ceased to amaze me every week. It was smart and sophisticated even if the material was over the top. Dave Burd and company produced some of the most pure and natural work. The show felt honest and real. I had a blast going on this journey.

    Please consider this show for

    Series
Directing – Hype Man, Ally’s Toast, Jail
    Writing – Hype Man, Jail
    Actor
    Supporting Actor – Gata
    Supporting Actress – Taylor Misiak
    Guest Actress – Gina Hecht
    Guest Actor – David Paymer

Can’t wait to see what they create next. The show really took off after the Hype Man episode.

In that interview, Burd broke down their thinking for their three writing submissions. He justified each well, but it also sounded like they could not decide, so they entered all of them. He said that they were submitting the pilot because pilots do well at the Emmys and it is the episode that the most people have seen. They were submitting “Hype Man” because it was seen as a standout and a turning point for the show and “Ally’s Toast” is his favourite. If they cannot make up their minds, how can they expect as much from voters? He did say that they considered “Jail”, but ruled it out because it is so musical and voters receive scripts. I advised him just to submit one when he asked and the FX campaign website has now removed “Ally’s Toast”, which is the right call! I think that the other two can get in, but I would not advise a show that has not been nominated to submit multiple episodes. And as much as I believe in Dave‘s chances, not a single other Editor or Expert is predicting a series nomination, so a conservative strategy would be wise.

For me, the best reason to submit the pilot is that both the showrunner and Burd are credited and if any individuals on the show should be nominated, it should be them. Names are not on the ballot though and I do not expect this to factor into voters’ thinking. The downside to the pilot is that it is nobody’s favourite. It ranks eighth of the ten episodes on IMDb. More people indeed will have seen it, but people do not vote for what they have seen; they vote for what they like. People who watched the pilot either kept watching or stopped. Those who kept watching undoubtedly came across another episode in the season that they preferred, so the pilot is not their first choice. If people did not keep watching, it was because the show was not for them, so they are not going to vote for it anyway. By trying to appeal to everyone with the pilot, they will ironically appease no one. Saladin Patterson will get the nomination for “Hype Man” and if they are fine with that, great! But if any branch responds to Dave, it is going to be the writers and I do not think that it is a contentious opinion that if the Dave is going to get one nomination, it should be for Dave himself. If they decide to submit only one, I would go with “Jail”. The voters will technically get access to scripts after the nominations, but this is analogous to voters affirming when they vote for the winners that they have watched all of the nominated content, which they obviously do not.

“Jail” has 9.7 on IMDb. You might think that that is not impressive because of course fans of a show are going to give high ratings, but not to this degree! The highest score that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has gotten for an episode is 9.3 and the best that Schitt’s Creek has gotten is 9.5. That kind of unanimous consensus is mostly reserved for all-time greats. “Through the Looking Glass” from Lost has 9.7; only the finales of The Americans and Six Feet Under have at least 9.7 from their shows and those are considered two of the best series finales; no episode of Barry rates above 9.3 except 9.8-scoring “ronny/lily” and just as “Jail” was the best comedy episode this season, that was the best one of last. I expect that voters will know what episode it is because “Jail” is named after the “Jail” sequence that opens the episode, but just note it as the finale in the ballot description to seal the deal. I see it as the best of both worlds in that it is a beloved episode like “Hype Man”, but it is credited to Burd, like the pilot.

I write this because I want the show to succeed. This is not meant to be interpreted as criticism of campaign strategy. My opinions are mine alone and not an official stance from Gold Derby. Keep in mind that this is a forum post authored semi-anonymously under the ludicrous handle of “thedemonhog” and not a published article. Again, these are mostly opinions, as opposed to hardcore facts necessarily.

While I also was surprised by how much I liked this, I do think your overwhelming praise for the show may not be echoed by Emmy voters, or even critics, but maybe that’s just me! Even if this show became deeper and more nuanced than I would’ve originally gave it credit for, it still has a very frat-bro brand to it, as evidenced by the first ten minutes of “Jail”, for a large portion of which I felt pretty uncomfortable at the prison jokes in the midst of a nation-wide crisis regarding that very issue. And yes, I know, that’s kinda the point and like 3 minutes later Dave says the end of the song is about prison reform, but still, ehhh.

The IMDb rating also goes with this being pretty fratty because that’s how that website goes. Look at the top 250 TV shows and see how long it takes for you to find something female skewing rather than male skewing (not to say shows like BB, The Sopranos, or The Wire don’t deserve their ratings). There’s plenty of GOT episodes above a 9.6 too.

I love dick jokes, and I think my taste may be more traditionally straight male-skewing than many users on this forum, but still, I have my reservations with Dave. A surprise? Yes. One of my 3 favorite comedies of the season? Sure, if animation is discounted. Do I find it likely that it finds Emmy success comparable to Atlanta? No, and as far as small auteur comedies go, not sure if it totally deserves to over Insecure, Better Things, Ramy, etc.

I agree that one episode should be submitted for Writing, either “Hype Man” or “Jail”, since, as Riley pointed out, if voters like it, they’ve seen the whole season and the pilot won’t help.

So, officially, they are submitting episodes 5 and 10?

“Jail” is genius! One of my favorite TV episodes this year. This show was fun and just great tbh. My favorite moment was the diarrhea sequence in episode 9… I have never laughed as hard…!!

I am now done with watching the show. I have to say that if it wasn’t Riley pointing out the show and its potential no way I would watch it even though I was aware of it as I thought this was just another low-scale FXX show. Anyway, it has taken me several attempts to go through the pilot and I just kept going solely to understand the hype behind “Hype Man”, which I wouldn’t be aware of without the forum on here, and I ultimately think it’s overrated. A character is revealed to have a mental disorder and that’s basically it; it is completely ignored later on, nor it is a commentary on anything. The show is a product of the genre “tell -your-own-story” and follows the all too noticeable genre trades like shift in POV, flashback to childhood, surreality. It’s like just like in the show, the real Dave had sat down with executives, this time for a television show, and decided to follow the footsteps of Ramy Youssef and Donald Glover. If it had a political agenda like Ramy and Atlanta it would have more critical attraction (those shows are also far superior). I also did not enjoy the performance of Dave Burd. The show was decent but nothing about it is awards-worthy as suggested.

Hype Man seems like a strong writing submission, while Jail seems like the most likely directing choice, though I’m expecting the Pilot will be it’s best shot

Glad to hear they’re drumming up some buzz. This show seems be popping up in a lot more conversations from it’s Hulu visibility
