I just don’t see how Scanlen could even be compared to Dever in the slightest.

In the slightest? I mean surely you can at least see the comparison of them being breakthrough contenders in summer series dealing with abuse that formed a popular internet following?

My opinion isn’t stopping no matter how much you want it to, Luca. Opinions are why we’re all here after all. I made my case for the comparison the other day so won’t repeat myself but the only thing I’d add is that perhaps I’m the only one around here who can see the parallels because I’m basically the only one it seems who didn’t like either performance. So I can easily see how an Emmy voter could select Wever and Collette but not Dever and it reminds me of when I could see how one could select Adams and Clarkson but not Scanlen. No doubt I’m now going to get called biased but thankfully my predictions through the years are right there for anyone to see that I’m not someone who doesn’t predict the performances they dislike.

I always value your insight, which is also why I responded. I actually thought you loved Scanlen’s performance, so that does surprise me a bit (I guess my memory is wrong). Even then I don’t see any other parallels between Dever and Scanlen than their age. Their roles are different, their performances are different and their shows are different. But I guess we can agree to disagree. Also, Clarkson and Adams were anointed as the show’s representation early on at the Globes and SAG (CC also had Perkins) – much like Dever, Wever and Collette have appeared as a package where they needed to (no one expected all three to make it at SAG).

Emmys FYC - "Unbelievable" and "The Handmaid's Tale" in all categories; Viola Davis in Best Drama Actress for the final season of "HTGAWM;" "Ozark:" Drama Series, Laura Linney (Best Actress) and Julia Garner (Best Supporting Actress)

Summer series, yeah. Abuse, yeah, but that’s also a very broad term. Dever’s is more timely especially with the me too and believe her movement. Breakthrough, eh. Scanlen’s was legit her first role. Dever has been working for a couple years now and has had already made a name for herself – Booksmart, Justified, Short Term 12, etc.

I know you do, Luca – I was just matching your “needs to stop” level of sass!

Yeah it wasn’t for me. Good but nothing special and I think the same of Dever. It’s actually crazy, looking now, how similar my thoughts on the two actors were in the Sharp Objects and Unbelievable threads.

I think what you’re probably getting at it is that the internet probably overhyped both performances a tad too much. I absolutely adore both, but I wouldn’t go as far as some people online who, for instance, think Dever outacted Wever – um, no. I will be writing a spotlight for Dever very soon, in which I will, however, describe as to why I think her performance is nomination-worthy.

The Eliza Scanlen comparisons need to stop. Dever isn’t Scanlen, and they most certainly aren’t in the same position in their races. For starters, Scanlen’s role was supporting and she played a pretty tough-to-swallow character (I thought it was intriguing, but whatever), while Dever is playing a rape victim and someone you generally feel sorry for. Scanlen’s work was subtle while Dever spends the first episode crying pretty much the entire time. Sharp Object didn’t win any Emmy acting awards because for some odd reason the TV academy prefers showier work (with some exceptions). Plus, Unbelievable has more broad appeal than Sharp Objects and is much more accessible.

In addition to what you’ve just said, Dever is far and away a more known name than Scanlan is / was.

Sharp Objects was her first role (outside of the tinniest stint on Neighbours — an Aussie soap) while Dever has had main roles on Last Man Standing & Justified, workEd on a variety of films (include 3 Oscar-nominated directors) and is a Golden Globe and BAFTA nominated actress.

Dever is getting in. End of story. Moving on..

This might be more impactful if it were coming from someone who wasn’t predicting Tom Wilkinson for Belgravia

I don’t think we should underestimate Idris Elba in Lead Actor. He managed to be nominated for all the four seasons of Luther so far.

Emmys FYC: Freddie Highmore in Best Drama Actor for "The Good Doctor", Jane Levy in Best Comedy Actress for "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist", "What We Do in the Shadows" and "After Life" in Best Comedy Series, "Ozark" and "Better Call Saul" in all categories.

Aren’t there rumors that Luther will end up going Drama series?

Oh, I didn’t know about that.

Theoretically, it would make more sense, but isn’t it obligatory for the season to have at least 6 episodes to be eligible for Drama or Comedy? Luther Season 5 had 4 episodes.

I will light a candle for the Dever and Washington fans to protect them from Helen Mirren riding in to snatch their wigs with her usual filler nomination!

She couldn’t even get in for SAG, come July no one is going to remember what Catherine the Great was.

Is the Undoing out? I see it’s been removed from the predictions center. If so, that’s big.

Inevitable but sad news, it’s gonna get swallowed by Respect a la Loudest Voice & Bombshell.

With Cynthia gone, do we now have a consensus 6 in Blanchett, Dever, King, Washington, Weaver & Witherspoon?
