While Normal People is a show about young people, I wouldn’t necessarily say it appeals largely to young people. I would guess the 40+ crowd is interested in the show as well, as it “feels” mature and prestigious in the way its filmed.

That’s another point I failed to mention – there is real dramatic weight to the material in Normal People, whereas Quiz is ultimately 3 episodes of light-hearted fun (though unsurprisingly compelling given the people involved).

    For Your Consideration:

Best International Feature: Instinct (The Netherlands)
Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)

If Years and Years came out right now, Thompson would be winning supporting actress, right?

And it would be winning Writing, Actor and possibly even Series.

However I wouldn’t go past it still getting a writing nomination.

FYC Emmys : Jodie Comer ("Killing Eve"), Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials"), Russell Tovery ("Years and Years"), Helena Bonham Carter ("The Crown") & The Crown, His Dark Materials, Years and Years, Succession and The Affair in all categories. The Politician : Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bette Midler and Judith Light.

FYC Goldderby Awards : MAURA TIERNEY AND DOMINIC WEST FOR THE FINAL SEASON OF THE AFFAIR

It’s a shame that Years and Years premiered last June, if it was released now it would be getting nominations for Series Lead Actor Supporting Actor Supporting Actress Writing

Russell Tovey has been moved to lead actor apparently. Netflix has six limited series contenders and it prioritizes four of them, so who knows maybe HBO is doing the same for Years and Years.

No one is watching Quiz while Normal People had an incredible word to mouth buzz those past few weeks.

That’s because Quiz hasn’t premiered in the US yet.

A primetime ITV show that was always going to be a UK hit with several late-night repeats to me.

    1. I’m sure ITV would love you to come on and say their programmes are always going to be a UK hit.
    2. Quiz’s data that forwardswill mentioned is from +1 showings an hour after the episode originally aired and 7 day catchup ratings.

I’ve skimmed through some of the comments and some people have said that Quiz is dead in the water because it lacks the name recognition that Normal People has or is destined to be like The Little Drumer Girl. I find that completely ironic because Stephen Frears, Sian Clifford, Matthew MacFadyen, Michael Sheen and Helen McRory have much bigger name recognition than Lenny Abrahamson, Daisy-Edgar Jones and Paul Mescal combined (or even Florence Pugh pre 2019 and Park Chan-Wook combined).

People are saying Lenny Abrahamson could be name checked in directing well so can Stephen Frears. Stephen Frears is a multiple Emmy nominated, Oscar nominated and BAFTA winning director whose name is probably still fresh in the mind of voters after directing A Very English Scandal. Lenny Abrahamson is a director who has ONCE been nominated for an Oscar and hasn’t even directed all of Normal People (unlike Frears who has directed all of Quiz). Let’s say if voters don’t even watch Quiz, Matthew MacFadyen is starring in the Drama Series frontrunner and could easily benefit in this category as a coattail to Succession’s success. Sian Clifford’s name like Andrew Scott’s is still attached to Fleabag’s and if you were predicting Scott to benefit from Fleabag love then you shouldn’t be discounting her chances. Michael Sheen (although he barely has anything to do in it) is a respected performer who already has been Emmy nominated and built up a wide range of work on television this past decade (i.e. Masters of Sex , The Good Fight, Prodigal Son).

Forgetting Sheen, MacFadyen, Clifford and Frears it is a lock for writing (if Mrs. America or Watchmen only submit one writing submission). One because it is incredibly well written but also because the writer James Graham isn’t a nobody whose writing credits include co-writing an episode of The Crown this season and Brexit (HBO).

You think it’s prioritising it? If it is I’m here for it.

Although not sure if Tovey being moved to Lead hurts or helps his chances. Really he should be in Supporting (had he gotten the nomination I would be predicting him to win).

If HBO pushes Years and Years, I can see it getting the last place in Series, plus a nomination for Emma Thompson. I see it quite easily getting a writing nomination

So the only thing between a Years and Years sweep and a potential shutout is the summer release date?

Fleabag exploded after its US premiere, so don’t count out Quiz just yet.

The Quiz essay really wasn’t needed because people weren’t disputing half of what you’re saying, and the other half is fabrication.

    1. I’m sure ITV would love you to come on and say their programmes are always going to be a UK hit.

ITV didn’t commission a miniseries about their own wildly successful gameshow, directed by Stephen Frears, adapted from a successful play, centred on an extremely high profile scandal … while expecting it not to be a hit.

No one said that Quiz ‘lacked name recognition’ – in fact I drew attention to its cast and acknowledged Frears’ involvement in multiple posts. No one said Abrahamson would be a ‘namecheck’, especially because that would imply his name being the predominant factor in his nomination. He was massively influential in creating this intimate series that was definitely not expected to have been as big as it is. Personally, his directing of the first 6 episodes is some of the best of the year.

Macfadyen is a long shot for his drama category, and there is no evidence of actors taking to Succession yet. Claiming that he’d get into limited lead actor on the basis of support for Succession is unfounded. Other than that, Clifford/McCrory/Sheen all give great performances, but only Sheen’s category is empty enough for him to be in contention.

I’m definitely going to wait and see how Quiz performs in the US before ruling it out for series, but I don’t think it’s a ‘lock’ in any major category (including writing).

Personally – and I might be the only one – I don’t think any one of Quiz, Normal People or Unorthodox are going to make a splash. I see one or the other perhaps sneaking into individual races, but neither one garnering enough broad support from the TV academy to sneak into limited series. But hey, if they want to take Hollywood’s spot, go for it!

Emmys FYC - "Unbelievable" and "The Handmaid's Tale" in all categories; Viola Davis in Best Drama Actress for the final season of "HTGAWM;" "Ozark:" Drama Series, Laura Linney (Best Actress) and Julia Garner (Best Supporting Actress)

Even if Normal People/Unorthodox/Quiz specifically don’t get into the series top 5, they’re all at play for other major nominations. Last year Sharp Objects missed writing and directing to A Very English Scandal, and Arquette and Whishaw won without series nominations. I think even if a Hollywood or IKTMIT sticks it out for the series nomination we can see them miss craft/other acting noms.

I also don’t really see how Little Fires Everywhere is likelier than any of these other shows with better reviews and more viewers.

Since we factor in IMDB votes as a metric of buzz/reception I guess it is worth considering logs on TV Time, basically a Letterboxd app equivalent for TV.

    Current Top 25:
    1. Watchmen – 219,242 (9.7/10)
    2. Unbelievable – 239,619 (9.84/10)
    3. Mrs. America – 19,295 (9.66/10)
    4. Hollywood – 95,918 (9.78/10)
    5. Little Fires Everywhere – 48,436 (9.76/10)
    6. I Know This Much is True – 9,470 (9.28/10)
    7. The Plot Against America – 19,312 (9.14/10)
    8. Unorthodox – 140,949 (9.8/10)
    9. Normal People – 22,267 (9.76/10)
    10. The Eddy – 9,986 (8.8/10)
    11. Devs – 33,304 (9.22/10)
    12. The Loudest Voice – 17,378 (9.12/10)
    13. Years and Years – 74,448 (9.78/10)
    14. Belgravia – 7,245 (9.22/10)
    15. Miracle Workers – 87,083 (8.08/10)
    16. AHS: 194 – 2,238,971 (8.42/10) *Logs are not broken up by seasons.
    17. Self Made – 61,422 (9.84/10)
    18. Catherine the Great – 17,404 (7.78/10)
    19. Defending Jacob – 44,045 (9.78/10)
    20. Castle Rock – 187,191 (9.16/10) *See AHS
    21. Mrs. Fletcher – 20,847 (8.24/10)
    22. The Spy – 34,910 (9.24/10)
    23. Quiz – 2,943 (9.46/10)
    24. Cherish the Day – 1,133 (8.84/10)
    25. Too Old to Die Young 16,407 (7.48/10)

Perhaps worth revisiting in maybe a months+ time when all eligible series will have premiered and we’re further away from show’s finales/series dropping (ex. Mrs. America, Hollywood, IKTMIT, The Eddy, Normal People, Quiz, etc). Scores are of course much more kind than IMDb.
