I just moved Chris Evans into 6th place in my predictions. The category is pretty weak, the series was popular enough, and he seems to be pretty well liked in the industry

    It was a hit

I also don’t rule out its chances but it’s definitely not a hit.

‘Hit’ is subjective. I read several articles about it debuting as a top 3 Apple show, and (anecdotally) I’ve seen and heard it mentioned in a lot of discussions here in the UK, and if something crosses over here it’s usually a ‘hit’ in some sense. Remember that the bar isn’t particularly high for the last series slot. Having said that, I’m still not predicting it, just throwing it out there.

The same UK where “You’d be hard pressed to find many who had tuned in“.

I’m still skeptical of Defending Jacob’s chances. It seems to be very overestimated in my opinion, especially Chris Evans. Also if we want to talk about anecdotal stories, not sure if anyone tunes into the Breakfast All Day podcast but maybe around two weeks ago, the co-hosts (all LAFCA critics) said that they have heard barely any buzz around Defending Jacob. They also kind of called out how weak Apple’s programming is overall. I’ll have to go back and transcript the convo.

My comment was anecdotal (as I admitted). It’s interesting that the very same article references Normal People as the antithesis to the mediocre, high-budget streaming shows it discusses, but I remember you ruling it out of the series race! The reality is that all of these contenders have question marks and the broad appeal (subject matter, movie star lead) of Defending Jacob is a plus.

Yeah, Defending Jacob isn’t a hit. There was an article or two which stated it was but I’m pretty sure Apple didn’t actually release its numbers, in terms of ratings. Evans could potentially happen because his category is pretty weak and he’s a big enough name but it’s not getting into series or actress.

Off topic but I audibly cackled reading this line

Paul Mescal, who probably cost as much as Witherspoon’s dodgy Morning Show wig,

I kinda found that whole article repulsively snobbish. But some of it is so ridiculous it’s just straight up wrong. Such as:

Fellow critical darlings Chernobyl, Derry Girls, Succession, PEN15 and Fleabag – all of which starred (at least upon their debuts) complete unknowns or people you only vaguely recognised from other things – didn’t cost an arm and a leg, either.

I will grant him Derry Girls and PEN15. But Chernobyl starred Jared Harris, Emily Watson and Stellan Skarsgard who had all had plentiful acclaim and recognition before they debuted. Succession is literally led by renowned veteran Brian Cox and also has Matthew MacFadyen who is very recognisable in the UK thanks to Spooks. Fleabag had Olivia bloody Colman. Just ludicrous.

I disagree wholeheartedly, honestly. Colman has been familiar to US audiences for two years. The Fleabag thing was great timing. Harris, Skarsgaard, and Watson are the definition of people “you recognize from here or there”. Cox is a legend but he also starred in “The Autopsy of Jane Doe”, he’s hardly Ian McKellan. I think the point the journalist was making is around this level of recognition-stardom is where TV really sets sail, as opposed to when projects are based around names that could also headline a blockbuster film franchise (Witherspoon, Anniston, Evans, Spencer, Carrell, even Emma Stone and Jonah Hill!!!!).

there are of course exceptions like BLL, but I’m pretty much think that point is entirely sound.

Most people here in the UK only have it as an add-on from existing Apple Music subscriptions

Fleabag had Olivia bloody Colman. Just ludicrous.

To be fair, Fleabag S1 had Olivia Colman before she came all caps Olivia Colman. The OC that was only known in the UK & for a series of comedic roles & Broadchurch.

Defending Jacob has 13 000 votes on IMDB, yes, it is very far from the 36 000 votes of The Morning Show, but is very close to the 15 500 votes of Normal People and the 20 000 votes of Hollywood, and it beats Little Fires Everywhere that only has 11 000 votes. Quiz only has 2300 votes, I know this much is true only has 1700 votes and The Plot Against America has a little below 5000. Unorthodox is the only popular one with 37 000 votes.

We thought that this category became weak after the postponing of some shows, but it actually is still a bloodbath. Any of the enumerated shows has a chance, Defending Jacob included. Watchmen, Unbelievable and Mrs. America (it only has 3000 votes, but it does not matter here, the Industry is going to watch it) are locks, but the other 2 slots can go to any of those shows.
