Except we know she can cry easily so she’s clearly not trying. Fair enough if you find it distracting but I just feel like it’s one of these things no one noticed until someone mentioned it on Twitter and now all her critics leap onto it. Same thing happened with Viola and her snot.

I have always noticed it but it never truly distracted me unless the material she was given was ridiculous like American Son or the later seasons of Scandal. It’s just a thing she has much like Viola’s snot or Natalie Portman’s eyebrow furrow whenever they cry. It’s not distracting if the performance is excellent and that’s what Kerry Washington has here.

She is reaching new subtleties she wasn’t able to reach on Scandal and handles Mia with such mysteir and complexity that it really does impress me. Anyone who says she is “playing Olivia Pope” is not paying attention to the significant differences of the characters.

Episode 4 was really great. Both Witherspoon and Washington are amazing. None of them will be competing for the win because, so far, there is no clear frontrunner between the two but they should be well placed for nominations. I still think the show can make it in series depending on how the rest of the season plays out.
