In for Kate Winslet but, can’t deny, this looks like Sharp Objects-lite

I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on with Winslet’s accent here. It’s not laughably bad or anything, it’s just kinda forced sounding?

    Just arrived in my inbox:

Screeners for episodes one through five of HBO Original MARE OF EASTTOWN are now available. EDITORS, PLEASE NOTE: Embargo for review coverage is April 5. We kindly ask that you refrain from revealing specific plot points in your coverage prior to the episode debuting. Episodes 3-5 are works in progress: Episode 3 has temp VFX; Episode 4 has temp VFX, music, SFX, credits; Episode 5 has temp color, VFX, music, SFX, credits. Starring Academy Award®, Emmy® and Golden Globe®-winner Kate Winslet (HBO’s “Mildred Pierce”), from creator Brad Ingelsby (“The Way Back”), with all episodes directed by Craig Zobel (HBO’s “The Leftovers” and “Westworld”), the seven-part limited series focused on family and community, MARE OF EASTTOWN, debuts SUNDAY, APRIL 18 (10:00-11:00 ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

Seems like they are really not done post-production.

I loved the first episode.  It is not going to be for everyone, but I found it immersive.  It is a slow, whole hour of worldbuilding and I was struck by the attention to detail in dressing this small-town American setting.  Suffice it to say that this show is a murder mystery, yet that murder does not happen until the end of the first episode (off screen). Evan Peters does not show up until the second episode, but even in the first episode, almost a half hour goes by before a single recognizable face aside from Kate Winslet appears on screen.

The most ridiculous part of the first episode is that Winslet’s character is being commemorated for being a high-school basketball champion.  Winslet supposedly having been a basketball champion is one thing (and this being a premise at all is another), but this is the exact same setup as last year’s Ben Affleck movie The Way Back—by the same screenwriter.  The man only has one idea!  I cannot believe that he got away with that.

Later episodes unfortunately regress to melodramatic twists and tropes that I had thought or hoped were beneath the show.  I do not need my heroes in fiction to have a surprising personal/familial connection to the villain/predicament, you know?  Or a twist that might end an episode gets immediately undone at the start of the next.

The poster makes it look like Kate Winslet is playing Kate Winslet with a badge, but this is nothing like I have seen her before and thankfully miles from Ammonite.  Her character is only forty-two, which is actually younger than she is, but she reads as much older, owing partly to the character being a grandmother, but more to Winslet’s well-worn characterization.  Like Cate Blanchett in Mrs. America, I do not think that people are going to care enough about the show for her to win awards, but I hope that she is at least nominated.

It is not really a showcase for anyone else.  Maybe someone gets really juicy material in the two episodes that HBO has not provided yet.  Evan Peters probably has the next most screen time.  He, Jean Smart and Guy Pearce all do what they can with their material.  Probably the most striking performance aside from Winslet’s is the victim’s, but it is short-lived.  Hopefully it leads to more roles.

Is it better than The Undoing?

She’s already had that level of an awards run for “Mildred Pierce” (Globes, SAG, & EMMY). But sure, it can happen again.

I was wrong about this, and it’s honestly exciting to have a Sunday night HBO show that’s at least pretty good back in the atmosphere. We needed some form of monoculture that wasn’t Marvel!
