Sky are going all out for this in the UK – it feels like there’s a trailer for it on every advert break, not just on Sky but on Channel 4 too. I’m excited to see it, and I really didn’t think that would be the case.

Top-notch pilot. Lots of world-building in the first episode, which I liked seeing. Connections between characters have to be discovered, and of course, the murder mystery (or mysteries) that fuel the season start here in an electric fashion. Kate Winslet was fantastic. Mare’s so war-torn and caustic, but there’s much more going on underneath the surface that I can’t wait to see explored. This is very much in the vein of “Sharp Objects,” “The Night Of,” & “True Detective.” The murder of a promising young (white) woman sets off a sea of future implications for not only the whodunit, but also for deep-seeded corruption in “small-town America” again. Guy Pearce was a calming presence, and I’d forgotten how good he is at doing that when he’s not playing villains. Jean Smart wasn’t around much, or Juliette Nicholson, but I’m expecting more for them in later episodes. No Evan Peters yet. I barely recognized David Denman. This was Phyllis Somerville’s last role before her death, which made me sad. The striking supporting performance here was Cailee Spaeny. The sense of dread surrounding her was palpable. The only downsides so far are these awkward Pennsylvanian accents that most are unfortunately saddled with maintaining to various effects, and a glaring newspaper typo that should have been found and corrected by the lowliest of production interns. Hopefully, the good will outweigh the bad or overly familiar plotting, and audiences will loudly cheer when Mare gets these fuckers at the end.

I’ve just watched the first episode, great episode. Great character build up. Kate was amazing, she’s gonna ace this role. No noticeable supporting performances as of yet.

I liked the first episode, it was more than showing someone died and the mystery revolving around it.

This show is an absolute must see! The tension, the screenplay, the characters, the world building, everything is top notch. Kate Winslet actually gives the best female performance of the year in this. An absolute knock out of a performance. If this was a movie she would have the Oscar in the bag.

I liked the first episode. It’s the best murder mystery first episode I’ve watched since Sharp Objects. I especially liked how murder wasn’t the main focus. Winslet was also great in her role.

In for Kate Winslet but, can’t deny, this looks like Sharp Objects-lite

I thought the same thing too, especially with the drink driving!

Watched the first episode and loved it, really like the slow-burn, unglamorous style and love Kate Winslet so will happily watch anything she’s in (except maybe collateral beauty)

I have to say, I wasn’t as in love with it as many of y’all were. It seemed to just pick tropes from many recent limited series and go from there. Female officer, check. With family issues, check. With alcohol issues, check. Pick up a guy, check. Socially outcast young girl, check. Everything gray/dark, check. Lead character called selfish/self-centered, check. Accents attempted and some failed, check.

Just seemed like nothing new here. I spent last year finally watching the original Prime Suspect with Helen Mirren, the basis for flawed female police, and it was brilliant. I think the story will determine its success for me since episode one was setup I’d seen before, so I can’t accurately judge.

I loved the pilot, just for the fact that it was competently made. There are so many shows just like this (on HBO specifically) and so many of them miss the mark from the get go. This pilot gave me the sense that this production team (and the writers) know what they’re doing. Clear characterization, realistic mysteries, good world-building. And it wasn’t so dark that I couldn’t see anything! (looking at you, True Detective and Sharp Objects)

Quite a good first episode.   I was impressed that it confidently established itself without a lot of bells and whistles- just a good cast of characters, good dialogue, and a good setting.  And more importantly, it did all that without being boring at all.  I was invested and am looking forward to more.
