Later episodes unfortunately regress to melodramatic twists and tropes that I had thought or hoped were beneath the show.  I do not need my heroes in fiction to have a surprising personal/familial connection to the villain/predicament, you know?  Or a twist that might end an episode gets immediately undone at the start of the next.

Probably the most striking performance aside from Winslet’s is the victim’s, but it is short-lived.  Hopefully it leads to more roles.

Okay, now that you have all seen the first two episodes, can we talk about Cailee Spaeny and also that ending of the second episode that was a regrettable reminder that this is a fictional television show?

Well, the ending of the second episode may or may not have ruined the entire show for me.

Let’s see how it goes. At end of the Season 1 of The Killing I swore I’d never watch that show again, and it turned out to not be what they were hinting to us.

Didn’t mind the end of the 2nd, but yes, Cailee Spaeny left a very strong impression!

This show is peak HBO, it baffled me like i thought it would be another crime drama who would be good but that’s it like the last season of True Detective, but boy was i wrong.

Kate Winslet is phenomenal, I’m liking all the actors, it’s a very good ensemble, the score is superb and the cinematography as well.

Hoping for the writing don’t fuck up with the finale, the direction is amazing too.

    For Your Emmy Consideration:
Matthew Rhys for "Perry Mason" | Ethan Hawke for "The Good Lord Bird", THE GOOD LORD BIRD in ALL CATEGORIES | Elizabeth Olsen and Kathryn Hahn for "Wandavision" | Tobias Menzies for "The Crown" | MJ Rodriguez for "Pose" | Jane Levy for "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist"

I’m not bothered by the cliffhangery aspect, b/c that’s HBO’s perfected formula with its detective shows (“True Detective,” “Sharp Objects,” “The Night of,” and to shameless effect, “The Undoing”), and it works! Ratings continue to build, and hopefully this will fuel its Emmy prospects at the end of eligibility cycle into summer voting. The ironic thing is that a series this strong with characterizations and world-building doesn’t need a murder mystery to keep it interesting. I’d have gladly watched Winslet headline this as a drama series where she’s solving disposable crime-of-the-week cases (if Kyra Sedgwick can do it for seven seasons, why not Kate Winslet for an infinitely better premise?), but the rich family drama would keep me tuned in long-term. I already know that people want more for Winslet than that (re: films). Right now, I like seeing the onion peeling off episode by episode, and Winslet is doing things I didn’t think she was capable of doing. Just like I had to know who killed that walking cliché Elena, I’m dying to know what happened to Erin (and maybe Katie lol), but that’s not the full extent of it. “The Undoing” didn’t have much stock to it beyond the whodunit, but “Mare of Easttown” most certainly does. Even when it delves into cheap soapiness like paternity plot twists, I’m in, b/c so much else is going on that I find more compelling.

It almost piss me off that this is a TV show and not a movie so Kate could have had her 8 Oscars nomination and probably her overdue second Oscar 🥲 She’s just proving on this show why she’s legendary and the best british actress of her generation

Not every great tv show needs to be a movie to win people oscars
They are fine winning Emmys or just being what it is, a television series.

I’m basically going to echo what everyone else is saying. There’s so much to unpack here. They just created this world and this town so brilliantly. I’ve never seen Kate Winslet like this. And there are so many elements at play – her ex-husband, the mother of her grandchild (am assuming this subplot will be as baity for Jean Smart as it is for Winslet), what’s going on with the teens, now the ex-boyfriend dead. Plus, missing Katie. Are the cases linked? Are they separate? What’s next in the relationship with Mare and Katie’s mom? I just want to know more.

I don’t trust Guy Pearce’s character at all, but that might be more because I don’t think you cast Guy Pearce to be only the love interest. Although I was duped by Lily Rabe on The Undoing for that same reason.

Surpassed my expectations with these first episodes, for sure.

    FYC:
Ego Nwodim ("SNL"), Nico Santos ("Superstore"), Lolly Adefope ("Shrill"), MJ Rodriguez ("Pose"), Kate Winslet, Julianne Nicholson ("Mare of Easttown"), Punam Patel ("Special")

    Episode Title: “Enter Number Two”

Synopsis: As Mare and Colin parse new physical evidence, phone records lead to an unlikely suspect; after lashing out at Helen about a possible custody fight over Drew, Mare receives some unprompted advice from Richard on how to move forward with Carrie.

I have watched the first two and it’s fine. I’m not blown away like all y’all are, and that’s fine. I don’t mind being a bit of a contrarian voice 🙂 I don’t hate it at all, there is just a sameness to it all so far. It’s well done sameness, but still, it feels like I’ve seen it before. So far the main difference is that she vapes instead of takes pills. I didn’t feel the ending of episode 2 was as big of a twist as y’all did. It seemed to be to be foreshadowed earlier. There will be a few red herrings, a few more fights, a few more twists. Hopefully Guy Pearce and Jean Smart do get more to do as well. I will keep watching because, as I said, it is well done (although a bit more consistency with accents wouldn’t hurt).

This show is like 80% fantastic, the character moments are all great. What’s drawing it back is the murder mystery, which in this episode honestly felt like it was almost in a different show. Like there’s these fantastic scenes like the ones between Mare and her mom, at the bar, the date, Jack at the hospital. Then you throw in the deacon throwing the bike off a bridge, which just feels so cheap when we know next to nothing about this guy and its episode 3/7.

It’s gonna be fine when ATJ wins the Emmy, but God is Winslet just destroying the competition. Simply one of the best we have.
