Burnett’s an ideal recipient.  “The Carol Burnett Show” is one of the all-time greats, and she was a pioneer in comedy.

They need to award either Mel Brooks or Don Rickles next year.

Eddie Murphy is a much better choice than Jay Leno. That being said I was hoping for either Mel Brooks or Don Rickles.

It breaks my heart that Joan Rivers died w/out getting this honor.  She is so overlooked in comedy circles.

Are you kidding, Kyle? Eddie Murphy is one of the most influential people in comedy ever. Do I need to list his achievements for you?

    I will anyway:

    • With him joining the cast of Saturday Night Live (at the age of 18), the show would have been cancelled and not be the juggernaut comedic institution it is today. He single-handedly saved the show, and his characters of Mr. Robinson, Gumby, Buckwheat. He is widely considered the greatest SNL castmember of all time.
    • His film work in the 1980s and 1990s made a lot of money and all received either critical acclaim, cult status or both. Beverly Hills Cop, 48Hrs, The Nutty Professor and Trading Places are all comedic masterpieces
    • He was the first stand-up comedian to take the edgniness of Richard Pryor to extreme levels. Eddie is one of the greatest stand-ups in history, and joins the ranks of Pryor, Carlin and Hicks.

Sure, his recent roles and choices haven’t been great, but so what? That doesn’t distract from the fact that he is a highly influential and beloved comedic force. I actually think he’s an amazing choice, and while I love her, I am not sure why Ellen Degeneres deserves this and you think he doesn’t.

Joan Rivers, Robin Williams, and Mel Brooks deserve it way more though. Eddie was only good in the past. He hasn’t been good in a very long time. If he had a big comeback comedy I could see it but still he is a meh pick. It’s all just personal opinion. Lots of people on that list are just so much more deserving and have had steady comedic careers. Also I think this award is being given too alot of young people. Yeah I love that Tina Fey and Will Ferrell and Ellen are in there but they are far from finished. It’s like the Lifetime Achievement awards given to people like Rihanna at music awards. Lifetime? Far from it unless they are dying of some terminal illness

Yeah. They made silly mistakes those years. Sid Caesar, Phyllis Diller, Joan Rivers, and Robin Williams deserved this award. Oh well.

I agree that Joan Rivers, Mel Brooks and Robin Williams are deserving of this award – but Eddie Murphy is equally deserving.

Kyle, I think you are blinded by the fact that Murphy hasn’t been doing good work these past few years – but that doesn’t mean his amazing early work is now void. Its the same like how Al Pacino would be very deserving of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oscars, yet he hasn’t done great work in a decade (film-wise). Eddie Murphy is an excellent choice for this award – he is a comedy legend, and while I do agree that there are other deserving candidates, Murphy is equally deserving.
