The ending was sweet, but for the most part, this was a rough watch. The writing could have been sharper. Armisen was not on point. This wasn’t funny or thought provoking, it was just… there. It’s not terrible, just very mediocre. I’m a huge fan of Chau and especially Mitchell, but I was not as amazed as many people here, they were good but I’m not sure I’d give them Emmys. American Vandal was definitely the better binge.
All of this being said, I am anticipating the second season.
Great definition. It was incapable to be a “new Master of None” and it isn’t funny. But there is many great and sad moments. And Maya Rudolph is amazingg.September 18, 2018 at 3:06 pm #1202636333This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.September 20, 2018 at 6:09 am #1202637881
I’ve made it through episode 6, Andre and Sarah, and I have thoughts. I knew nothing going into the show except Maya and Fred are married in it. Then end of ep 1/beg of ep 2 happened. Then end of ep 2/beg of ep 3 happened. Well now then!
Maya Rudolph is amazing. She’s funny and sad and sassy and reserved. She’s hitting it out of the park for me in her most fully realized role since Away We Go back in 2009. It shows how amazing of an actress she is and that she can be more than just funny. Fred is ok and actually works here. His is the less grand role, but I’m glad he didn’t bring too much of the Fred weirdness to it.
The supporting roles are fine. Catherine Keener’s Kase is growing on me and I like Noah Robbins as Mark. He’s the right mix of dumb kid and world weary.
The writing is fine, but at times it does leave you scratching your head more than it should. You have this great premise and you detour, like with Andre and Sarah. The performances were great but, to me, the payoff was not nearly enough to spend an entire episode on 2 characters we haven’t seen and not feature June & Oscar. To me, that’s a big miss. It would make a wonderful short film, but in the course of a season that is only 8 episodes to begin with, it didn’t work for me. I know some people like it artistically but I need a little logic and continuity.
So far the series is a solid B but could be higher. My friend binged it last weekend. She said the first 2-3 episodes could have been combined and shortened into 1 mega episode. I don’t disagree.
I don’t see it getting into series. Writing possible, directing maybe. Maya I hope so, but it isn’t a guarantee.September 22, 2018 at 11:24 am #1202638971
I finished up the season. I would probably only give a nod to Maya, possibly Keener, maybe Noah Robbins in a moment of generosity (I did like him & his character). A friend of mine binged it last weekend and liked parts but said there were lots of bread crumbs left but zero payoff for them. I agree, too many threads started but not followed through on. It turned into about 4-5 different shows over the course of 8 episodes. This makes me eyeroll harder at the “Andre and Sarah” episode.September 22, 2018 at 11:36 am #1202638972
Love this one and think Maya and Fred give it a nice, surreal edge appropriate to the proceedings.October 13, 2018 at 10:48 am #1202651967
After watching this show I can say that this is the best comedy of 2018, and I’m not exaggerating a bit. Watching the show was such a wild ride that led me to question things. Considering HFPA’s love for Amazon, hopefully the show wins Comedy Series and Lead Actress. At Emmys, if there’s campaigning Comedy Series, Lead Actress, Lead Actor, Writing, Directing are certain nominations. Way better than Barry which did great with nominations.October 20, 2018 at 8:47 pm #1202657978This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.October 21, 2018 at 9:24 am #1202658346

Wow, I couldn’t disagree more. None of these episodes reached the level of even the worst episodes of Barry.November 25, 2018 at 2:15 pm #1202681752
I just finished binging this show and what a treat. I loved this whole series and I think this will end up winning the Globe for Maya and Series. I am so happy she finally got something to showcase her talented post SNL. I usually cannot stand Armisen but he was surprising here as well, a character of his I liked. I cannot wait to see where this show goes in Season 2.July 29, 2019 at 7:58 am #1203000836
This isn’t shocking but I’m bummed because Maya was really exceptional in it
