Streep will reportedly play opera legend Maria Callas in an upcoming HBO movie based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway play, Master Class. The play features Callas giving a series of vocal masterclasses at The Juilliard School, New York, while giving insights into her life and past through large soliloquies. On stage, the role has been portrayed by Zoe Caldwell, Patti LuPone, Fay Dunaway and most recently, Tyne Daly.
I don’t like this idea, personally, because it is made for the stage. The fourth wall is broken, and the play is actually staged as a master class… Thoughts? I certainly hear Emmy bells for Streep.
I just hope they cast the young singers with actual singers and not people miming to tracks. Please HBO, if you’re gonna do it, do it right!June 18, 2014 at 5:41 am #319806
The Emmys love big names. Meryl Streep can fart and win An Emmy For it.June 18, 2014 at 5:46 am #319807
As a play, Master Class is… meh. As a vehicle for an actress, though… whoa. Meryl can gain 300 pounds chewing the scenery in this one. The role was built for it.June 18, 2014 at 6:25 am #319808
I anticipate GD posters griping that Streep is stealing another role for women-of-a-certain-age from other qualified actresses, but I’m certainly excited about this news!

My thoughts exactly.June 18, 2014 at 8:34 am #319813
I adore La Streep, and I think she could perform this role perfectly. However, I just can’t imagine anyone making her look anything like Callas. I always have a hard time getting pass someone playing a noted real person and not looking like them. Hopkins as Nixon being the worst case ever.June 18, 2014 at 8:46 am #319814
Since Drama Desks regularly gave out Best New Play in 1975, there have been 6 plays that got Desks/Tonys for Play/Actress:
Elephant Man (with Actress ties) and there”s a film version considered a classic released a year later, Lost in Yonkers which was made into a film inc the original actress 2 years later, Proof which was made into a film netting Paltrow a Globe nom.

Go Meryl!June 18, 2014 at 8:49 am #319815
If I’m not mistaken, this is the first time she’s done television work since 2003, and there are only a handful of titles overall. I think it bodes well for the project if she’s selected it as her next role. And yes, this screams emmy contender right away.

This needs to come out in the same year as Cate Blanchett’s Cancer Vixen.
