Please link here or message me privately if something is bothering you in terms of content or formatting or if something needs attention for whatever reason.

Most of the moderating that I do is subtle cleanup to improve readability, but I could use your help, especially now that we are doing a thread per episode of Game of Thrones.

In general, please do not use the “quote” function to quote the entire most recent post in a thread. It is redundant and is a headache for anyone catching up on a thread because everyone has their limit when it comes to scrolling. You may quote a specific section of the last post to make it clear what prompted your post, although I personally avoid even this, unless I want to break up my post to reply to a variety of specific points in the most recent post. Tom eliminated the ability to quote quotes a few months ago on my advisement because it resulted in extremely long pages and what I am saying here is in the same spirit as that hard restriction against mutli-level quoting. An alternative to quoting that could be used more is using the @ symbol to direct readers to what post prompted your post.

Also, please do not post consecutively or almost-consecutively in general. Say that you make a post and realize a minute later that you have something else that you wanted to say. You have two options here that will not result in me manually merging your posts for you. The first thing that you can do is edit your post. You can even un-check the box that will leave an ugly note at the bottom of your post to say that there has been tampering. The other thing that you can do is delete your original post after copying its contents into a longer new post. I do this sometimes if I happen to know traffic is high at the moment and to ensure that my amendment is seen because it will bump up the thread and reset the timer since the last post.

Further to this point, making several posts in a thread in the span of, say, fifteen minutes is not ideal even if they do not technically appear consecutively just because traffic happens to be high at the time. If you post a thought, then someone else posts something unrelated and you want to post another thought, consider being a trooper for me and following the steps about about merging or deleting. The forum is generally not read in real time. What I am saying here does not apply of course if the conversation is sequential.

It is tremendous that there is so much discussion and I want everyone’s posts to be read. The more scrolling on a page or clicking to the next page in a thread (because the page has reached fifteen posts) that someone has to do is going to make the prospect of catching up on discussion more daunting and perhaps too daunting. All of the issues that I am talking about here have to do with formatting and not content.

I am happy to help and I will continue to delete repetitive quotes and merge consecutive posts, but this does take a lot of time, which I might otherwise be able to use to give more attention to the Oscar and Grammy sub-forums. There are other forums out there that will give you an error message if you attempt to post consecutively, but I take care of it manually here. The worst offenders are @lacourseauxetoiles, @wattsgold, @jays, @kvothe_snow and @wolfali. Note that I will never alter the actual words of your posts and whenever I merge a post into another, I always merge the one with fewer likes into the one with more.

Well, I didn’t know this. I also don’t what to make of being referred to as one of “the worst offenders”. I know it’s forum lexicon but still lol

If everyone is aware of what I am getting at, then it will be possible to distinguish people who are deliberately making separate posts and people who do not know how to edit posts or whatever. Your commenting here indicates that you have heard me, so I will be conscious of that.
