Not that it matters, but she didn’t sit once in her episode (she visited that apartment with June and then visited her in the hospital after she gave birth to Holly). But if people want to continue this discussion, please do it in the drama thread.

With the Limited Directing discussion whilst I can understand why people think Unorthodox‘s casting nomination shows directing support I actually think it’s Normal People‘s casting nomination that is significant. Whilst Unorthodox is a Shira vehicle it still has an ensemble cast whose perspectives have some sort of focus in the small moments Etsy is off-screen (i.e. Leah, Moishe, Yanky). Normal People is basically a story about two people. There isn’t a single moment that isn’t told from either Marianne or Connell’s perspectives. Each of the other characters (although superbly acted by the actors with whatever material they had) are irrelevant to the story. There isn’t a single moment they are on screen where you don’t see the supporting characters from the perspectives of Marianne and/or Connell.

I think the fact that Normal People got into Casting over Hollywood and Little Fires Everywhere is something we shouldn’t ignore.

FYC OSCARS : VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", GLENN CLOSE FOR "HILLBILLY ELEGY", ANTHONY HOPKINS FOR "THE FATHER", CHADWICK BOSEMAN FOR "MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM", PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY).

You disregard the achievement of casting Paul Mescal (and Daisy Edgar-Jones).

Well that is an achievement for sure but what I meant is that it doesn’t really have an ensemble in any form (which Unorthodox has in some form) so if we’re thinking Unorthodox‘s casting nomination is significant for its directing chances because the show is a Shira ‘vehicle’ as some call it then we should give credit to Normal People‘s directing chances when their show is literally a vehicle of two extraordinarily talented actors (Daisy should have been nominated this year btw).

But Unorthodox also got into series which Normal People did not.

Yes and I am not saying Unorthodox‘s casting nomination does not prove it is strong in directing (it does the complete opposite actually). What I am actually saying is that I think we’re underestimating Normal People in directing when it also got a casting nomination.

Also I understand the comparisons between Maria Schrader and Susanne Bier but I think its worth saying that Susanne Bier was an Academy Award winning filmmaker which Maria Schrader is not. I think if anyone can be compared to Susanne Bier’s situation it is Lenny Abrahamson (who is an Academy Award nominated director whose show like The Night Manager is a widely watched British import).

Each of the other characters (although superbly acted by the actors with whatever material they had) are irrelevant to the story.

They are not though. Connell and Marianne’s relationship with their friends and family is an important part of their characters, and indirectly or sometimes directly influences their relationship with each other. In some cases, they are even responsible for driving the story forward, like with Connell’s depression.

Normal People does focus solely on its two leads and isn’t concerned with developing or bringing attention to the supporting characters but that doesn’t mean they aren’t relevant to the story or the show.

Guess I phrased myself wrongly there. What I meant was that the stories of the non Marianne and Connell characters are irrelevant to the show. They are only used to either develop the characters of the two leads or to share insight into their situations.

Obviously they are not totally irrelevant but its not like in Unorthodox where you see the situation from different perspectives.

But Unorthodox also largely focuses on Esty and Yanky only. I don’t think a couple of scenes with Moishe and Leah make it any more of an ‘ensemble’ show and thus, a more prominent casting pick than something like Normal People tbh.

Hmm so I get (deservingly) called out for spamming and then this gif literally appears whenever I post something on here (and has appeared twice in a row might I add on this thread) and that’s not spamming?

Also are you both the same user? You both seem to like each other’s post (sometimes being the only people to like each other’s posts), post the same gifs and use the same/similar forms of speaking.
