Thought it over and I’m currently predicate a full on Watchmen sweep in every category at the main ceremony.

How are people even considering Cate still? Mrs. America is obviously going home empty handed.

Reese lacked the PoC factor Octavia had. Also, many voters probably didn’t finish LFE given that it’s up for both series and directing so it was supposedly popular with the academy and Reese snub can’t be explained otherwise.

What? The directing episode, though posthumous, is the finale. They probably just preferred Kerry’s performance.

Also, Octavia Spencer had an extremely baity performance and played a real person. She’s a classic nod if the year weren’t strong.

I think Lynn Shelton is winning Director. I mean people are making comparisons between Schrader and Bier’s win for The Night Manager but Bier was an Oscar nominated Golden Globe winning director. Also Lynn Shelton clearly is beloved in the industry.

FYC OSCARS : VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", GLENN CLOSE FOR "HILLBILLY ELEGY", ANTHONY HOPKINS FOR "THE FATHER", CHADWICK BOSEMAN FOR "MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM", PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY).

Am I the only one who thinks if anything acts as a spoiler to Watchmen in directing it’ll be Normal People? Lenny Abrahamson is a ‘name’ and they are known to gravitate toward them, especially in vote-splits. See Stephen Daldry and Jason Bateman recently. The fact that Normal People managed a Casting nomination (largely voted on by directors), even over series nominee and a more obvious pick like LFE is proof that it has reasonably good amount of support within that branch. The show’s directing is also more acclaimed and discussed than either LFE or Unorthodox and that is always a boon I guess.

It did miss series but that was probably because it was underseen compared to others. It has bucket-loads of passionate support from its relatively smaller group of fans and if that passion can ride it to multiple major noms then a win in a category where the frontrunner is vulnerable is very likely IMO.

The Reese snub is still inexcusable weeks later. She was far better than Washington in LFE. I imagine other factors were at play, though.

I also think that Shelton could upset here but I’m not sure I’d predict it. Watchmen still feels safe there despite it’s three nominations.

This forum’s adamance that the academy couldn’t have just preferred Washington’s performance to Witherspoon’s is slightly questionable… especially when many of the critics expressed how they preferred the former to the latter

Absolutely. What exactly is so inconceivable about this ?

The constant trashing of Kerry’s performance is just weird

I would hope Normal People takes it if Watchmen doesn’t. The direction is superb! Still hoping for Watchmen though!

Very good analysis. I didn’t bring it up in my post because I was simply mentioning the other 2 as examples. I think any show can win this really, but the Casting nomination is indeed key, not only here but also for drama and comedy directing. I honestly thought Fires was up for casting too.

I agree. I’m pretty much judging who I am predicting to win Series and Directing in both Comedy and Drama by who wins Casting.

Reese had material as evidenced by everyone posting that “YES YOU ARE” gif every other page and most of us considered her very likely. Again, they could have just preferred Kerry Washington’s performance, which I don’t understand what is so hard to believe about that and if it were the other way around, there wouldn’t be this perplexed confusion of Reese being in without Kerry. The latter has more Emmy nominations anyways.

You are offensive with your statement.
