I know most major Netflix movies get a small theatrical release before going on the streamer, making them Oscar qualifying. What about movies that don’t get the theatrical release? Could they be submitted to the Emmys? With the VERY limited field, movies like To All the Boys 2 or Horse Girl being released this week, would have a chance. It would have been nice to see a movie like Paddleton get in last year. If HBO bought and released it like The Tale the year before, it would have had a chance.

So far they have not submitted those movies, but as far as I know The Most Hated Woman in America and Juanita were individually submitted by their producers.

Netflix wants Oscars and they face enough criticism about submitting for those, so my theory is that they are trying not to muddy the waters by getting nominations at the Oscars for some movies and at the Emmys for others. The only outright movie that Netflix has ever submitted for television awards consideration has been Special Correspondents. Most of their submissions have been extensions of series (Black Mirror, Breaking Bad, The Office). They also submitted a Christmas special that was not even a full hour (A Very Murray Christmas) and have been submitting American Son as such. If you have not seen that one, it takes place entirely in one room in real time and even the opening credits call it “A Netflix Television Event”. Individuals from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before submitted for the Emmys and even got guild nominations for casting and makeup, plus a win for music supervision. I would love to see the producers submit themselves for the sequel.
