This was probably my favorite episode. Mainly because it focused more on character development than the suspense leading up to the eventual cliffhanger (which I enjoy, but this felt like a welcome change of pace). Kidman was fantastic as usual, but this episode gave far more for Sutherland and Grant to do, and both really delivered. The heart to hearts Grace had with both Jonathon and Franklin were truly touching and allowed all three actors to really shine. The new female lawyer is great in this episode as well. The character moments in this episode were terrific. And everyone is still a viable suspect, which is an achievement with only 2 episodes left. Writing and direction was on point as usual.
The Undoing isn’t really anything more than a whodunnit with classy production values and great acting, but who says you need to be anything more? This show is 20 times more watchable and entertaining than something like Mrs America, which was boredom inducing to me at the same stage.

Agreed. She is killing it on this show.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 16, 2020 at 2:52 am #1203840297Loved this episode! I was pretty much on the edge of my seat for all of it. This is Donald Sutherland’s Emmy tape just like the reviews hinted. His high level of gravitas is something that this pulp is rightfully leaning on, and why wouldn’t they really? Like I said before, you wouldn’t cast Sutherland just to stare at paintings in art galleries every episode. There was a reason he was hired, and here we have it. I’m mesmerized by Noma Dumezweni and hope that she lands role after role with this key exposure behind her. I think I have a working theory of who killed Elena, and if I’m right, it’s gonna be explosive. I waver in my sympathies with Grace by the episode, but there’s no doubt in my mind that Nicole Kidman is excellent in this role and deserves praise for it.

She’s going to be playing the principal supporting role in a new HBO Max comedy with Cristin Miloti and Ray Romano in January!

ReplyCopy URLNovember 16, 2020 at 11:23 am #1203841072I’m really surprised so many people enjoyed this episode. I found the writing really awkward in several places, particularly the chess scene between Kidman and Sutherland in which he talks about his infidelity, the scene between the Principal and Henry, the scene between the Dumezweni and Grant in her office…

November 16, 2020 at 11:32 am #1203841093Sutherland deserves the Emmy and imo from what I’ve seen so far so does Grant. Also whilst she isn’t in my personal lineup (so far) I really won’t be mad with a Kidman nomination. The only part of the show I am finding weak is the writing but I really hope this cast get their dues because they are quite good.
NOMA DUMEZWENI!

November 18, 2020 at 8:25 am #1203845180In a profile of the Top 20 rising stars in Hollywood for The Hollywood Reporter, one of the chosen stars, Normal People’s Daisy Edgar Jones singles out Nicole Kidman (whom she is currently watching in The Undoing) when asked whom she is most dying to work with:
The Person I’m dying to work with “I’m currently watching The Undoing with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant and I just love Nicole Kidman. It’d be ridiculously cool to be able to work with her”.

November 18, 2020 at 6:35 pm #1203846586The ratings for The Undoing increased once again for its latest episode reaching over 1 million viewers. The series is now accumulating more viewers for HBO than Perry Mason or Lovecraft Country ever did.
Considering this episode was more of a filler episode than anything else, I’m sure the ratings will only increase again over the next 2 weeks when we get the courtroom drama and the finale of who actually committed the murder.

November 20, 2020 at 8:46 pm #1203851913I’m convinced the killer is Noah Jupe simply because in episode one Nicole was like, “Henry, you can’t leave the blender dirty!” He thinks he can get away with doing that, so what else does he think he can get away with?
I’m being facetious but also serious lol.

If that’s the case I feel like I’ve seen this somewhere both.
Hmm…
P.S. Not a hater. Am thoroughly enjoying this show so far.

November 21, 2020 at 1:21 am #1203852118I thought Episode 4 was the weakest episode so far. Donald Sutherland and Hugh Grant were great, but I constantly keep questioning the writing choices, and I struggled to stay interested throughout the whole hour

Well yes, insofar as they’re children, but in the case of The Undoing the story then becomes of a white young male’s privilege whereas with Sharp Objects, the daughter is extremely abused in many ways herself, which of course contributed to her psychopathy.

Yes of course. I just was making a joke.
