Glad to hear about the ratings! This is the potboiler murder mystery show that general audiences craved, so it’s nice to see it deliver in that regard. That’s the real determining force in the end. I think this limited series would have had little to no Emmy impact in crowded May 2020, so having the move allowed it space to breathe and organically develop into a word-of-mouth ratings hit. No need for a season 2 at all, since it will have said all it needed to say by the series finale. This isn’t “Big Little Lies: Upper East Side,” as many wrongfully labeled it as being due to the creatives behind it. Can’t wait for next episode!

Agree, this show has achieved exactly what it was meant to be, an entertaining who done it mystery that appeals to many people for escapism.

Not sure why there’s been the level of critique towards it. Sure it’s far from perfect but not all shows have to win awards in every major category to be a success..

Episode 5 was fire. Noma Dumezweni was electric.

The 75% Rotten Tomatoes score is ironically also how I would rate this show.

I hope Dumezweni can get some sort of recognition because unlike Grant and Sutherland she isn’t likely to get awards recognition.

Just caught up on this, and liking it much more than I thought I might. Kidman and Grant are terrific. It’s really nice to see the latter stretching his chops after spending so many years type cast as the snarky romantic lead. At first, Sutherland’s role looked to be pretty thankless, but he’s since gotten some strong material and delivered as he always does. Most other actors would completely fail at delivering a line like “I’m an old fashioned cocksucker”. Dumezwani is also doing terrific work here. I had heard of her stage work before, but this is the first time I’ve seen her act, and I hope I continue to find her in more high profile projects. Jupe is also doing very strong work, and Ramirez only had one scene last episode, but it was by far the best work he’d done on the show. Before his character just felt generic, this time he actually had some depth to work with. Looking forward to the finale.

I hope Grant wins the Emmy. He’s terrific in this and it’d be a shame if his career renaissance doesn’t get any recognition ever.

Also I agree about Sutherland, Dumezweni and Kidman.

Nothing will likely top Ethan Hawke’s performance this year, but Hugh Grant doing challenging roles like this shouldn’t go unnoticed for nominations, at least.

Grant has had a significant career renaissance as he has gotten older. He is no longer the romantic lead but instead has gravitated towards substantial character work and inhabiting complex roles, like A Very English Scandal and The Undoing. Grant was also brilliant in the well-reviewed Paddington 2!

I was disappointed he was snubbed for Florence Foster Jenkins after being nominated for the Globes and SAG. He has been nomination worthy a few other times, particularly Four Weddings and a Funeral and About a Boy. I’m not sure his role in The Undoing is going to be award-worthy, especially considering his competition, but I would like for him to be rewarded soon. Grant is far more talented than just the charming romantic lead; he has a wicked sense of humor and the ability to navigate the ambiguous, exploring the complexities in dramatic figures like Jeremy Thorpe and Jonathan Fraser.

HBO is pushing this show (and Grant in particular) A LOT. If you type in Hugh Grant on Google or YouTube he’s literally EVERYWHERE.

    From the The Guardian Newspaper:

“The Undoing has hooked a nation. In fact, several nations. It has piled on viewers with every episode, as those who have watched the previous ones on delay pitch up for the next weekly dose. It’s on course to be watched by 10 million people in its native US, a terrific number in these multiple-platform, fragmented, super-competitive televisual times.”

“More valuably, perhaps, even than that, it has seized the public imagination, gaining traction on social media and spawning countless WhatsApp groups that are the equivalent in furloughed and socially distanced 2020 of gathering round the watercooler to discuss the latest twists and turns of everybody’s current favourite story.”

If it manages to stick the landing in the finale on Sunday, it will be HBO’s most successful show of the year despite the mediocre reviews and will only help its awards chances moving forward.

Moving this to November was a stroke of genius! It was the needed distraction American audiences wanted right after a fraught election season, and pre-covid era NYC has proven to be an unexpectedly nostalgic respite for a pulpy murder mystery series. You did that shit, HBO! Re-entering this into my Globes & SAG predictions.

Even black Hollywood is hooked on this show. Issa Rae posting about how much she is enjoying The Undoing:

I think people are really underestimating how big this could be at industry awards. Other shows may be more acclaimed, but I could really see this show potentially sweeping at something like SAG for Kidman, Grant and Sutherland.

I think the show would have been lost among all the other contenders if it had been released last spring, so it was definitely a good decision to move it (but it was more than likely only bc of covid not making their planned fall shows ready). The atmosphere, the snow is also more suited for a fall airing so it was honestly a bad idea to want to air that at the end of spring.

People are treating this show more as a guilty pleasure rather than prestige drama that’s why they are also watching The Queen’s Gambit.
