HBO has released some FIRST LOOK photos of Queen Latifah as legendary blues singer, Bessie Smith in the upcomng biopic, “Bessie.” The highly anticipated film will premiere on Saturday, May 16 at 8 p.m.
As previously reported, “Bessie” is being described as “an intimate look at the determined woman, whose immense talent and love for music took her from anonymity in the rough-and-tumble world of vaudeville to the 1920s blues scene and international fame, capturing her professional highs and personal lows, and ultimate legend.”
“I have been excited about this project since the very beginning. When HBO got involved, we were thrilled and we worked together to make something that would capture Bessie’s life honestly and respectfully,” stated Queen Latifah.
Joining her on the screen are Michael Kenneth Williams, Khandi Alexander, Mike Epps, Tika Sumpter, Tory Kittles, Charles S. Dutton and Mo’Nique.March 1, 2015 at 7:20 am #342462
I love Latifah!This should be good!March 13, 2015 at 12:39 pm #342464
^Maybe you are right, who knows? This could be for Queen Latifah what Lackawana Blues was for S. Epatha Merkerson ten years ago. I know Queen was nominated for an Oscar a dozen years ago, but sadly she has not done many high profile projects since then. I am kind of hoping this works out for her.
Honestly I am not really familiar with the subject matter of this film, but regardless of my lack of knowledge I get the feeling this is going to be a prestige project on the part of HBO. Considering how barren the Made for TV Moive field looks this year, I would be shocked if Bessie is not nominated and the eventual winner.
Granted this project could be a total flop or be less than stellar, but HBO has been on a roll the past couple of years so I have a hard time seeing this flopping.
On a seperate note, unlike many people I have always loved the TV Movie/Mini-Series categories (or whatever the hell they are choosing to call it nowadays) at the Emmy awards. Despite that, I am highly alarmed and concerned about the depth and quality of the Made for TV Movie category this year. I am afraid it may end up being pretty embarrassing with only one or two worthy nominees and the rest being bad to awful Lifetime Movies. I do not really know why they made the switch, but maybe they should have kept the TV Movie/Mini-series series category one award.March 13, 2015 at 12:43 pm #342465
Looks pretty great. Scared for Frances McDormand in Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie. Queen Latifah is coming.
Thank you most kindly for posting this, Mr. Taloson. I’ve been waiting for the first trailer, and it did NOT disappoint! It looks outstanding. Very savvy release date on HBO’s part, too!! Can we say emmy nominations all around?!
Oh, yes, Ms. McDormand………… WATCH OUT!!March 13, 2015 at 1:04 pm #342466
So happy for Latifah. Looks like her strongest dramatic work in some time.March 13, 2015 at 5:35 pm #342467
Yaaaaaassssssss!!!! I love Queen Latifah, and this will also be the first role I have seen Mo’Nique in post-Oscar win. I’m very excited for this, the teaser was great.March 14, 2015 at 3:49 pm #342469
I’m excited to see Queen Latifah’s in another dramatic role. From what I’ve read, this has been a passion project of hers for years. Hoping that Michael K. Williams, Khandi Alexander and Mo’Nique receive some awards attention as well.March 15, 2015 at 12:08 pm #342470
This looks great. I’m hoping this will give both Khandi and Michael their over due nominations because both look amazing here. Queen won’t win the acting Emmy, but she’s a lock for another Golden Globe. And I just realized that she’ll win the Emmy and this year it’s on FOX. “Living Single” and “Martin” did big business for FOX back in the day. Like “Empire”, but on a small scale. So that will be a great moment even though the connection won’t be explicitly referenced.March 15, 2015 at 5:06 pm #342471

That GIF is terrifying.
When I saw “Bessie starring Queen Latifah”, I assumed that it was a Lifetime movie-of-the-week and discounted it. Turns out that it is on HBO, so I am now predicting nominations across the board. Funny how that works.March 16, 2015 at 1:31 pm #342474

See how you dodged judging a “book” by its cover?
