Following the enormous success of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, NBC will be presenting a live telecast of the 1968 groundbreaking rock musical, Hair. Tony winner Diane Paulus, who made her Broadway debut in 2009 when she helmed the most recent revival, will be directing along with Alex Rudzinski. The telecast is set to air on May 19th, 2019.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, producer Bob Greenblatt talked about how things are going with the upcoming telecast (so far).

What’s the latest on the live musicals at NBC?
I’m working with Neil Meron on Hair. We’re casting it right now. Beyond that, I don’t know. We tend to take them one year at a time. They’re enormous undertakings. And there aren’t a lot of shows you can get the rights to. We have an idea for a live musical for Christmas, but I can’t talk about that yet.

Have you discussed how you will address the nudity in the original Hair for broadcast television?
We haven’t crossed that bridge yet, but I can probably guarantee that there’s not going to be much nudity. (Laughs.) If you’ve ever seen the show, there’s not that much nudity. It’s less than a minute, in the dark, which was controversial 50 years ago — but it’s almost unnecessary. You’re not going to see nudity … well, maybe a little.

For those who were looking forward to Hair Live!, it’s been scrapped.

Well that stinks, not only because of the disappointment of Rent and the lack of decent candidates in the Television Movie/Variety Special categories, but for the sake of “broad-based, family musicals” instead? Who is to say whether Hair couldn’t have a “wide appeal” as the other musical “events” have? Plus, the 1979 movie version was really lackluster and I don’t believe that there are filmed version of the stage play in circulation, so I was looking forward to a solid version of this show to be produced for more to see. Oh well.

Please, please, please, pleasepleaseplease, please, did I mention “please,” please tell me the reason is something other than, somebody high up at Comcast is afraid that if the progressives gain power in 2020, they’ll raise taxes on Comcast, which can’t really raise prices to compensate as there are already enough cord-cutters from the combination of what it charges now and channels being dropped left and right (because the channels want more from Comcast for broadcast rights) as it is, so the last thing it wants to do is anger the current administration by airing a musical with strong anti-Vietnam War overtones and have it interpreted as a “get our troops out of the Middle East, and keep them out of Venezuela while you’re at it” message (what’s the saying about M*A*S*H: “How do you protest the Vietnam War without anyone noticing? Set it in Korea”)

Okay, that is a bit of a reach, even for me, although I think Hair is dated – and that’s probably why it has been pulled.
