The series premieres tonight.
EPISODE 1×01 “Episode 1”
The series premiere about a NYC homicide detective Jane Timoney (Maria Bello) coping with the sexism and harassment of her colleagues while pursuing leads opens with the newly assigned Timoney being bypassed on a case that should have been hers. Her complaints to her supervisor (Aidan Quinn) find a sympathetic ear, but little else until tragedy strikes.

ReplySeptember 22, 2011 at 4:45 pm #226547I’m certainly looking forward to this one. It’s got a stellar cast, and some good names behind the scenes. That
said, it’s got mighty high expectations to fulfill. Maria Bello is more than capable as an actress, but I hope the
series can evolve into a genuinely compelling character study rather than becoming a generic crime procedural.

O’Byrne, Aidan Quinn), and visually it looks great, but the detective aspect is fairly routine, and the macho boys’ club is overplayed — we didn’t need a boxing match to remind us that the characters have testosterone.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 22, 2011 at 9:35 pm #226551I must admit, I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Is it the most original thing under the sun? Of course
not, but Maria Bello is one hell of an compelling actress to watch at work. If the show can bring some
dimension to the supporting players and keep the case of the week aspect of the show consistantly interesting,
this could grow into something great.
Also, big props to Peter Berg here. Great pilot to look at, and that last chase sequence was superbly executed.
Episode Grade for “Pilot”: B+
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 25, 2011 at 9:30 am #226555That so disappointing about the ratings. Hopefully NBC gives the show a chance to grow. It’s got the potential to develop into something big, so long as NBC keeps it around long enough. They haven’t had a drama in that 10pm slot for a few years now, and with a lead in like “Parks and Recreation”, it’s no wonder it’s suffering.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 25, 2011 at 8:35 pm #226557Connie Britton was considered for this? I don’t see how she could’ve pulled this off, Maria Bello is perfect for this. I liked this Pilot, loved it visually, I think the supporting cast is terrific and if this were a hit with audiences and critics you could see a lot of Emmy nominations in the show’s future…
Having said that, I feel like they didn’t need to remake Prime Suspect to cash in on the brand, that’s basically the only reason. I mean, absolutely everything here has been done before in other places too. Is this the first time that somebody (and a tough woman) has been promoted for whatever reason and the men below her don’t like it and don’t support her? Is this the first procedural in New York City that has had these exact characters and looked this way? No, No and no…no. I feel like I’m watching everything from NYPD Blue to Southland.
So I think they could’ve come up with their own spin on this tired topic and characters and create an “original” show.
It’s because of the cast and because these (cliché) situations will give these guys and Maria Bello some serious acting opportunities and I may want to stick around to see that. Also, I don’t have any other procedurals to watch right now (or in recent years) so I’ll give it a try, but there’s nothing new here.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 26, 2011 at 7:43 am #226558Ah, but if they had gone out and made this an “original” show they wouldn’t have had the brand recognition that the “Prime Suspect” title brings. And that’s what really matters. When it came to giving this show a green light, cashing in on the “Prime Suspect” title was probably more important than making a show that in any way resembled “Prime Suspect.”
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 30, 2011 at 2:12 pm #226560Not as strong as the pilot but Bello is definitely a great actress. Seems like they’re focusing more on the characters interactions with each other than the actual case of the week which is a great contrast to “Law & Order” type shows.
However, I don’t see this lasting more than one season (at most) because the ratings are pretty bad.
