Looks like Kenan is leaving. End of an era. Wow.
KENAN THOMPSON TO STAR IN SINGLE DAD COMEDY SERIES IN THE WORKS AT NBC
by Joe Otterson | Sep 21, 2018
“Saturday Night Live” star Kenan Thompson has signed on to star in a comedy series that has received a production commitment at NBC, Variety has confirmed.
The series, titled “Saving Larry,” is a single-camera comedy in which Thomson would star as a dad who has to be both mother and father to his kids after his wife dies. And he has to do it all with his father-in-law hovering over him.
Thompson would also executive produce the series in addition to starring. Jackie Clarke is the writer and also executive producer, with Lorne Michaels and Andrew Singer also executive producing. Universal Television will produce along with Michaels’ Broadway Video.
Should the project go to series, it would likely mean Thompson’s exit from “SNL,” where he recently broke the record as the longest-serving cast member in the show’s four plus decades on the air. Thompson first joined the show in 2003 and was recently nominated for his first acting Emmy in the supporting actor in a comedy category. He and Chris Redd, Will Stephen, and Eli Brueggemann won the Emmy this year for original music and lyrics for their song “Come Back Barack.” Thompson’s other TV credits include the Nickelodeon sketch series “All That” and “Kenan & Kel.”
Clarke is a writer and co-executive producer on fellow NBC comedy “Superstore.” She also previously worked on shows like “Undateable,” “Happy Endings,” and “Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television.”
Thompson is repped by UTA, Michael Goldman, and Del Shaw. Clarke is repped by UTA and Felker Toczek.
Deadline first reported the “Saving Larry” news.
I figured it would eventually happen. He should do great outside of SNL due to his popularity and personality.September 27, 2018 at 1:28 pm #1202642524

Awkwafina is an unexpected but awesome choice to host. Is this Seth’s first time hosting? He could be an easy Guest Actor nomination.September 27, 2018 at 1:44 pm #1202642532
Surprising that Constance Wu didn’t get the easy “Crazy Rich Asians” hosting bid, but instead Awkwafina. That’s really cool. I think she’ll be a natural at this. Travis Scott? Nope.
Seth Meyers? That’s interesting. I’m expecting an epic Weekend Update that could also bring back Fey, Poehler, and Fallon. Paul Simon, okay, I guess.September 27, 2018 at 2:13 pm #1202642543
Seth Meyers hosting is the best thing I could’ve wished for.September 27, 2018 at 5:33 pm #1202642584
I’m so here for Awkwafina and SethSeptember 28, 2018 at 6:35 am #1202642784
I am all for Seth and Awkwafina hosting. Still feel like Constance Wu would have been the better choice in terms of fanbase (she has fresh off the boat as well) BUT Akwafina is funnier than her in my opinion so I can see why.September 28, 2018 at 9:03 am #1202642839

Plus Constance has to film Fresh Off the Boat so maybe there’s also the schedulingSeptember 28, 2018 at 11:26 am #1202642889
Looks like Ariana Grande was the first choice for the season premiere like I figured, but she opted out for “emotional reasons” (most likely b/c of Mac Miller’s death). I’m more convinced than ever that she will host and/or sing before the season is out.
WAS KANYE WEST BOOKED FOR “SNL” SEASON PREMIERE BECAUSE ARIANA GRANDE DROPPED OUT?
By: Jem Aswad | Sep 28, 2018
In a recent interview with “Saturday Night Live” boss Lorne Michaels, he said that Kanye West was not the first choice as the musical guest on this weekend’s season premiere: Michaels says it was Ariana Grande.
However, a source close to the show tells Variety that Grande’s appearance was never confirmed.
Some 52 minutes into the “Origins With James Andrew Miller” podcast (listen below), Michaels says that West was booked only after Grande pulled out “for emotional reasons.”
“We had Ariana [Grande] drop out for emotional reasons two days ago,” Michaels says, although it is unclear when the interview was conducted (West was announced on Sept. 17). “That’s our premiere, and then Kanye stepped up, and he’ll be there.”
Michaels may have been referring to Grande’s former boyfriend Mac Miller, who was found dead of an apparent drug overdose on Sept. 7.
The singer has had a challenging couple of years, which have included not just Miller’s death but also the May 2017 terrorist attack on her concert in Manchester, England. However, just two weeks later she headlined the emotional “One Love Manchester” all-star concert in the city, and last month released her very well-received fourth studio album, “Sweetener.”
The singer’s recent social-media posts have reflected that dichotomy, veering between a couple of touching reminisces for Miller, cheerful posts and ones like yesterday’s — possibly inspired by the Brent Kavanaugh hearings — which says “can i pls have one okay day. just one. pls.”September 28, 2018 at 12:14 pm #1202642917
First East Asian host this century (2001+), no?September 29, 2018 at 8:43 pm #1202643486
Here we go!
Matt Damon! Rachel Dratch!
Funny cold open. New main title design!September 29, 2018 at 9:46 pm #1202643496
Didn’t care for the cold open (too long, too many attempts at punchlines in search of jokes). Update was good, where was this chemistry at the Emmys. The Parnassis Career Day sketch though? Adam Driver was BRILLIANT! That’s the best thing I’ve seen on SNL in a while.September 30, 2018 at 12:18 am #1202643519
The cold Open was hilarious – Matt Damon, Rachel Dratch and Aidy Bryant were perfectly casted and did a great job.
Didn’t like McKinnon as Graham since it was basically a gimmick and she just didn’t do a good impersonation.
I also hate how good Cicely Strong is but still doesn’t get that Emmy nomination she should have gotten by now.
Good Weekend Update, but maybe it’s coloured by how much I hated them at the Emmys so anything by comparison would look good?
Oh and Adam Driver for Comedy Guest Actor please – if he gets that Oscar nomination I’m easily predicting him.September 30, 2018 at 7:36 am #1202643590
Much stronger season premiere than I expected. Adam Driver nailed it in sketch after sketch. The old man one at the school career day was an instant highlight. He has a long way to go to the Emmys next year, but anything’s possible, I guess. Loved the cold open and Matt Damon’s unhinged Brett Kavanaugh. Che and Jost both had funnier moments on “Weekend Update” than anything they did as Emmy hosts. This is their comfort zone for ten minutes and certainly not hosting anything ever again. Kanye was embarrassingly bad in all three of his numbers. Sad to watch that play out. Songs were bad. Performances were half-assed. Guest stars didn’t elevate anything. Clear lip-syncing and too-loud backing vocals. The audience clapped out of either respect for him or rote habit, but I would have booed. All of that brought down an otherwise good episode.
