1. Forced Family Fun
I think the idea of the episode was excellent, but the execution didn’t play out because it didn’t need to be a full hour.
2. Hecking Order
This episode is why I love this show. I loved the character of the new teacher especially because I’m right at that same age and how he was trying to apply everything from college to his class. This might be in my top 5 episodes of this series.October 8, 2011 at 10:07 am #230860
I guess all the people who watched this on the old board didn’t make the transfer.
This weeks episode was excellent again…though for the first time I thought it was almost borderline preachy, which is something I never got from the show before. If Patricia Heaton would somehow get nominated this next year, this is a definite possible submission episode.
This show is as good as ever and it seems to be up year to year in total viewers.October 8, 2011 at 5:53 pm #230861
Yeah I agree that all these episodes have been great this season.
I was looking for this thread a while ago, I needed somewhere to say how incredible Eden Sher is. You really won’t find that many actors that will commit to a part like this girl does. The episode where she couldn’t get to class on time was hilarious thanks to her. She’ll just do anything and everything the writers tell them to. Definitely an Emmy deserving performance.October 8, 2011 at 6:58 pm #230862
I have to jump in and say, this is quite an entertaining show. I’ve caught it a few times by chance and have always been entertained. I need to add it to my appointment viewing television. That’s awesome if the viewers have been increasing!
I also agree with BenitoDelicias about Eden. She really gets into it. This was most evidenced to me most recently when I was on an airplane and decided to watch a couple of episodes of the show without earphones (Paying an extra $3 to the airline wasn’t worth it to me). She’s awesome.October 13, 2011 at 2:37 pm #230863
Anyone else see “The Test” last night? What a brilliant performance from Eden Sher; this could absolutely be a submission if she only had a chance of being nominated for Supporting Actress!

“The Test” was another good episode in a run of them, excluding the dull season premiere. Charlie McDermott was the MVP for me here.
I think Eden Sher is a great young actress, but honestly Sue is often so overwritten that she grates my nerves. This week, however, I loved her standing up for herself with the cheerleaders. That’s a step in the right direction because it allowed the actress some range and room to do something other than be desperate and mug.October 15, 2011 at 11:35 am #230865
Another solid episode, though not as funny as the past two weeks. It was great to see Sue stick up for herself for once.

This one started out slow but it quickly picked up. Franke being forced to haul around Brick’s social group for halloween was brilliant. “Stop rubbing up against my leg you’re not a real cat.”October 27, 2011 at 6:06 pm #230867
This show is so hilarious, but this week I was more into Mike and Sue, it was very sweet to see Mike like this and such a move forward for the writers to make Sue a little more grown up. Sue is the best here, she quickly outdid Brick who was the star in season 1.
I forgot to comment on “The Test”. Sue going over the counter to grab the phone was insane. Eden Sher for Supporting Actress!
Last week was a little slow, but any episode that features Brad is already better. I couldn’t stop laughing at him and Sue when they saw each other after they both raised their hands.October 28, 2011 at 5:28 am #230868
“Halloween II” 10/26/11
**1/2 out of ****
Not as strong as the last few weeks. The only story that was fully fleshed out and satisfactory was Brick’s social group. Heaton was great here (the woman’s previous Emmy wins weren’t a fluke, so wake up next year, Academy!) and Brick being the most normal was very funny. The Mike/Sue story just didn’t jell for me; I was hoping for something more revelatory in the end. And Axl and his buddies trying to bogart Halloween should have been so much funnier (Charlie McDermott is often the show’s MVP for me), but it felt like they just ran out of time and truncated that story. There’s a real art to doing an A-B-C three-story structure in a 22-minute sitcom and they didn’t succeed here; they should go watch some Friends or Cougar Town and study up.November 17, 2011 at 12:01 pm #230869
Good Sue and Frankie episode with a funny Norm McDonald returnJanuary 4, 2012 at 8:23 pm #230870
I thought this episode worked really well. I loved how not reading made Brick so stressed out. “If your going to knock then knock, don`t say knock-knock.” Mike smiling at his workers was pretty funny. Sue got what she wanted, which was to be a wrestling cheerleader. Having Brad in an episode is always good. I liked the scene between Axl and his old teacher. The kids reaction to his difficulites with there, their, and they`re was funny.

Heaton’s acting was great. Especially the scene where Brick told Frankie his favorite color. Axl in the classroom was funny as was the cheerleaders blocking the view of the wrestlers. One of best gags of the show.January 4, 2012 at 10:48 pm #230872
I think The Middle and Happy Endings have both been better than Modern Family this season.January 5, 2012 at 4:37 pm #230873
^ thank you, it’s great to find another person who also thinks Modern Family is just the third best comedy on ABC’s wednesday lineup.
I think this episode was very well written one of their best episodes ever. I liked Brick’s storyline or New Year’s Resolution the best, it gave Shaffer possibly his best acting on the show yet and gave Heaton tons of material and she didn’t disappoint. That scene when he reveals his favorite color was very sweet.
I can’t say enough good things when it comes to a Sue/Brad pairing, and the sight of Brad in the wrestling “costume” was insane and a hilarious moment for the episode as was Sue’s new club, loved Eden Sher in those scenes.
