A big official announcement revealed yesterday as Simon Cowell has added Demi Lovato to the judges panel along with Britney Spears, L.A. Reid and himself of course.
What do you guys think about the addition of the 19-year-old singer to the panel? I found it interesting that Cowell opted to go with a very young singer to judge rather than take someone with tons of experience in the industy like Mariah Carey, Fergie, or Janet Jackson.
Is this panel very appealing for this upcoming season?May 15, 2012 at 8:06 am #243826
The fact that Britney Spears will be judging people on vocal ability is a bit of joke. If I were a singer performing in clubs, struggling to make it big I would be insulted if she told me I had pitch problems. But there’s no doubt that in her prime she was a remarkably dynamic performer so if she focuses on that aspect of their performances, MAYBE then I can see her being a good fit. But this feels like a desperate ploy for ratings, which I’m sure they’ll get in the first few episodes before taking a nosedive.
And Demi Lovato is an interesting choice though I have my doubts that she’ll be able to criticize given her troubling relationship with her critics. She’ll probably be a slightly better version of Nicole.
I’ll probably watch the first few episodes just to see the dynamic but the show is really unpleasant to watch compared to The Voice and even American Idol. Hopefully they’ll do a lot of retooling to lighten the mood for season 2.May 15, 2012 at 8:35 am #243827
The ratings of the first few episodes will definitely be huge, then they will drop like any shows and be stabilized along with last year’s numbers. That’s one of the main reasons the hired Demi and Britney as judges.
I think the panel could potentially be great but it could also go the other way. We’ll have to wait and see.
I don’t know why for some people it’s hard to like the show. Maybe it’s because after all those seasons of American Idol, it’s hard to watch other types of singing competition. I never watched American Idol so I really don’t know if it’s better or not but I agree that The Voice as a format is refreshing compared to the others.
I’ve always liked XF and it’s the most famous and international format among all singing competitions. I watched all 5 seasons here in Italy and 3-4 seasons from the original UK serie (which this year will celebrate its 10th) and they always get better every year.May 18, 2012 at 2:51 pm #243828
It’s definitely a joke to have Britney Spears judging people on vocals. She sounds like a dying cat. If I were auditioning and she told me I was bad, I would cuss that bitch out. I bet some contestants will be insulted by her critiques.May 18, 2012 at 5:00 pm #243829
I guess this doesn’t bug me half as much as it would if say Britney were going to be a judge on “The Voice”. To be honest, if J. Lo can be a judge on “American Idol”, then what’s the difference? Furthermore, the music industry is more than just about having a voice anyway, so maybe someone like Britney is a good fit for the show.
Also, with these singing competitions, mediocre vocalists often make it through over more deserving competitors so in the end, Britney might end up critiquing someone who is on par with her vocally.
Off the top of my head, some contestants who have been eliminated too soon over the years: Tamyra Gray, Melinda Doolitle, Jennifer Hudson, Katrina Parker.
Hot body + mediocre voice + catchy singles…isn’t that what half of the popular singers have going for them anyway? Britney, J.Lo, Rihanna, Katy Perry, etc.May 19, 2012 at 5:14 am #243830
“The X Factor” is not all about vocals guys. Britney Spears is a dynamic performer and is very talented. She knows how to sell records and I’d rather have her than Demi Lavoto, whoever the hell that is.May 19, 2012 at 5:56 am #243831
The thing is that Britney has very much lost all the things that made her a great entertainer despite the fact that she lacked the voice. Nowadays, Britney can’t dance at all, she’s invisible to her audience except for a video or two and she stopped pretending she was singing in her tours. She basically gave up and everybody around her is trying their best to cover for a what has become a robotic version of Britney Spears with some good singles and average albums so she remains relevant to her core fanbase and nobody else.
I don’t think it’s that dramatic that she’s a judge here, you can say she’s replacing Paula Abdul who is her match in every single way except that Paula can probably “dance circles” as they say around Britney even though she’s 20 years older. But once upon a time you could have said they were the exact same artist.
Jennifer Lopez can still say she’s a huge entertainer and have the balls to tell you that you suck, and Paula has gotten herself into this comfortable judging position because she’s been doing it for 10 years so we got used to it. But Britney? I agree that I would feel insulted about anything negative she has to say about me. When Tony Lucca sang her song on The Voice, I said the same thing I always say, “it must suck for Britney that 100% of the world can outsing you”, maybe not do it better than those producers did it for your original single, but definitely outsing you.
Now, Demi Lovato, that’s something I don’t get. An extremely ammount of people have no clue of who she is, what she does, or a single song of hers. I know who she, but I don’t even know if she can sing or what her voice sounds like. We would’ve been better off loving to hate Nicole Scherzinger/Paula Abdul or if Cheryl Cole hadn’t gone through her X Factor debacle.
Demi won’t factor into the show’s initial ratings, that will be all for Britney, specially since half the people that will watch probably believe Britney hasn’t done anything relevant since she shaved her head, so they’ll be desperate to see what comes out of this.May 19, 2012 at 4:33 pm #243832
I don’t know much about Demi Lovato, but I think she was a Disney channel star and has quite a young fan base. The only song of hers that I know is “Skyscraper” from last year. Some argued that that was a great display of vocal ability. The only other thing that I know about her was something about a meltdown last year. Oh and that Madison De La Garza who played Juanita Solis on “Desperate Housewives” is her younger sister.May 23, 2012 at 8:21 pm #243833

“The Voice” contestant Tarralyn Ramsey auditioned last week and all 4 judges were impressed. She sang Whitney’s “Run To You.”July 17, 2012 at 7:36 pm #243836

Exactly. If you haven’t noticed people, pop music has so little to do with your voice. It’s the whole persona and package you put forward and Britney can absolutely comment on that.July 17, 2012 at 7:37 pm #243837
