The new series premiered this past Wednesday at 10 on NBC. Its regular timeslot is 8 pm on Wednesday nights.
Christina Applegate as “Reagan Brinkley”
Will Arnett as “Chris”
Maya Rudolph as “Ava”
Nick Cannon as “Calvin”
James Pumphrey as “Brian”September 16, 2011 at 6:37 pm #223096
I found the pilot ok, but not great. Maya Rudolph is definitely the funniest person on this show, if we are only judging from the pilot. She was hilarious in all of her scenes. I found Will Arnett to be the weakest, and didn’t really find anything funny about him.
The Pilot would be a good emmy submission episode for Maya Rudolph!

I actually thought the opposite of you thesmartone, I found Maya Rudolph to be incredibly over the top in her role and not all that amusing at all. And I was glad Will Arnett was playing a much more down-to-earth character than GOB Bluth or Devon Banks for a change. I also thought Arnett and Christina Applegate had great chemistry together.
I didn’t love the pilot, I thought it was just ok, but I will certainly give this show some time to find how to use the talented cast better.September 17, 2011 at 9:54 am #223098
I also found the pilot just okay. It definitely did have some great moments (a lot of the stuff between Arnett and Applegate), but it failed in connecting Maya Rudolph’s storyline to the main storyline of the show. Rudolph was fine but they really need to step up the writing for her character. My favorite part about the show was that most of the pilot episode (besides any of the scenes with Rudolph in it) had a realistic style but without having to use the mockumentary format that almost every other comedy uses nowadays.
I probably won’t be watching this series regularly but will probably checkback in at the end of the season if the reviews become better.September 20, 2011 at 9:02 am #223099
Episode #102: “Cool Neighbors”
When a new couple moves into the neighborhood, Chris and Reagan become obsessed with finding out how they are so cool. Meawhile, Ava tries to figure out why the baby Amy does not seem to like her but takes a liking to Calvin.

This was definitely a downgrade from the Series premiere. I would say that Applegate was the star in this episode, but it was just a pretty boring episode. It did have its moments, but mostly boring.

I agree that this episode was significantly less good than the pilot, and in fact I thought the episode of Free Agents that followed it was much funnier and easier to watch. I guess I have a peeve about unnecessarily cringe-inducing moments unless they are funny enough to justify them, and these definitely were not funny enough. But I liked the Ava stuff better than in the pilot. “Keep on watching and growing” is a pretty great catchphrase.September 26, 2011 at 11:10 pm #223102
I actually thought the second episode was an improvement on the pilot.
I think Arnett and Applegate have good chemistry, and I adore Maya Rudolph, but they must figure out a way to tie her character into the theme of the show. (first plan of attack: ditch that mousey assistant that purchased the “baby wallet”…she was distracting.) Also, Ava just can’t show up at random hours…that’s not legit. That joke has already worn itself thin.
I have faith in this show. “It’s ironic”September 26, 2011 at 11:17 pm #223103

The Free Agents pilot was promising. The 2nd episode was awful. AWFUL. I wanted to like this show so much, but it’s gonna be cancelled so soon.
Mostly I just wanna know where I can purchase that dress that Hahn was wearing. I loved it.September 27, 2011 at 8:49 am #223104

Chris and Reagan try to bring the sexy back into their marriage with the help of Chris’s new friend Reed. Meanwhile, Ava blames Reagan for the advice that led her to break-up with her now engaged ex-boyfriend, B-Ro.

Most frustrating show of the season.
This wasn’t very good at all. You’ve got to be kidding me with the fact that the best part ended up being basically a Lonely Island clip.
I just don’t get how Applegate, Arnett, Rudolph, Forte, Taccone/Schaffer (can’t tell them appart), Spivey, Russo and Michaels think this was funny from the script all the way through editing.September 29, 2011 at 12:16 pm #223106
I disagree. I really liked this episode and thought it was a major improvement. Applegate and Rudolph shined. This is a good submission for Applegate.
However, the lacking quality of the first two episodes have caused me to nix this show from my best comedy predictions. I’m also nixing Applegate from Lead Actress due to that category being competitve. I’m keeping Arnett and Rudolph because of the weakness of Arnett’s category and because of their names.September 29, 2011 at 7:46 pm #223107
Watched the first 3 episodes last night, and much to my surprise I was extremely impressed!
A very funny show and Applegate, Rudolph and Arnett would all be very deserving Emmy nominees. Rudolph is the clear scene stealer (that B-Ro and Ava “Basically” video clip had me in tears!) Applegate is solid, as is Arnett, even though the latter’s role is nowhere near as showy – which is nice to see from him for a change.

I really liked the last episode. Maya Rudolph definitely needs to get nominated (well assuming they don’t get cancelled).
