At some point, I think Yorgos Lanthimos was attached to direct this series but I guess he needed to drop it to pursue more personal film projects.

Variety reports that the nine-episode first season is set to debut on Aug. 25 at 10 p.m. ET on Showtime.

It was said that Showtime has been its third network home at at some point it was first been in development at AMC while had previously been ordered to series at YouTube Premium. Glad that it’s with Showtime now. Executive produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov.

The official teaser trailer looks really good and ends with a weird shot. Official full trailer is coming the next couple of weeks for sure.

Set in a small Orlando-adjacent town in 1992, “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” follows Krystal Stubbs (Dunst), a minimum-wage water park employee who lies, schemes and cons her way up the ranks of Founders American Merchandise (FAM) — the cultish, flag-waving, multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme that drove her to ruin in the first place, run by the powerful Obie Garbeau II (Levine). Determined to make a better life for herself, Krystal dives deep into FAM and develops a tangled relationship with FAM’s most loyal and fanatical follower Cody (Pellerin), until her business begins to affect those closest to her, including Ernie (Rodriguez), her affable water park boss, and his FAM-skeptic wife Bets (Ditto).

Kirsten Dunst deserves all the awards, but the show being showtime is worrying. I personally can’t watch Showtime shows except for Ray Donovan and Escape at Dannemora (I did struggle with the latter too).

What’s wrong with Showtime? I personally like/love some of their shows to varying degrees. Homeland, Penny Dreadful, The Tudors, Weeds, United States of Tara, Dexter (first 3 seasons), The Borgias, Californication, Twin Peaks and Masters of Sex are the shows I love for better or for worse. Would have love On Becoming A God in Florida to be on AMC in the tradition of Mad Men and Breaking Bad but good thing Showtime took it when maybe at some point AMC passed it over.

Too  bad about Lanthimos dropping out but it looks like it still has a bit of his DNA.   Great teaser, and Kirsten Dunst is just world class.

This sounds like a role Dunst could absolutely kill. So happy it’s with Showtime instead of YouTube. Can’t wait for this!

Someone’s finally getting her Golden Globe she was robbed of three years ago.

Has it really been three years since that unforgivable evening? My, how time passes us by…

Ugh, I will never forget this. Definitely one of the worst award show losses in recent memory.

Do you think this will go in limited series or drama series at the globes? I feel like theres more room for dunst to get in limited series actress than drama actress?

Who won that year again? Never mind. It’s a travesty she lost for her performance in Fargo.

I actually prefer Dunst over Paulson at the Emmys. Both gave an Emmy-worthy performance but atleast Dunst lost to an equally deservung performance unlike at the Globes. Define travesty.

Emily VanDerWerff on the show: “I’ve only seen a couple, but it’s REALLY good, and this is the KIND of role that could win Dunst an Emmy (albeit in a very crowded category)
