I think this is probably the most difficult category to predict this year, mainly because I cannot make up my mind between either Planet Earth 2 or the Crown.
I’m 99% confident the winner will be one of these two, but keep going back and forth on which one of these two it will be. So I figured I’d ask you all for help. What do you think?

I couldn’t find the ballots for this category, which is a little frustrating since I’d like to know whether names appear. However, this is the most interesting information I found based on a quick Wikipedia search:
– The original Planet Earth won this category (different composer though)
– The show many people like to compare The Crown to, Downton Abbey, won this category twice. However, I’m not a big fan of that comparison, particularly in this case where they don’t have the same composer.
– House of Cards was nominated for season 1-3, won season 3, then missed season 4 before returning this year. It’s the only show and composer combination which has previously won.
– Lemony Snicket nominee James Newton Howard is a legend among composers: 8 Oscar nominations plus Grammy and Emmy wins (he’s the reason I want to know if names are on ballots).
Honestly, I’m not really sure what the Crown is going to win other than Lithgow. Planet Earth is my pick with House of Cards or Series of Unfortunate Events as spoilers.
ReplyCopy URLAugust 30, 2017 at 5:28 am #1202198966Even though none of their shows are nominated this year, HBO has never been able to win in this category. And HBO has only been able to win once in the title theme category, for Six Feet Under.

Fixed it. Thought he was the nominee here since he’s done both the soundtracks, but he’s not listed as the nominee. Someone else is.
Can someone tell me how this works?

Hans Zimmer, on both soundtracks, only did the opening themes, so Rupert Gregson-Williams composed the rest of The Crown’s music and Zimmer did other arrangements in other episodes, not on the episode submitted apart from the opening.
ReplyCopy URLAugust 30, 2017 at 9:38 am #1202199224That’s a tough one, personally I’d go with Planet Earth 2, and that’s probably what I’ll end up predicting, it’s not unsimilar to the win for Cosmos, plus they know they can award The Crown multiple times later on. I might actually put James Newton Howard above the crown just on his name recognition and popularity.

August 30, 2017 at 10:22 am #1202199289I would say howard would be a top contender based on name alone…

I think that nominees are rated. Nominations are panel-based, hence the lack of ballots with lists of submissions.

Ah yes of course they likely are panel-based same as Original Music and Lyrics.
The original Planet Earth won in this category and isn’t the only documentary to do so, but equally I believe in this year’s limited series composition lineup we have OJ: Made in America and the White Helmets.
So it just seems like their definition of Series is a bit broken in this case. If Planet Earth were a movie they would probably make it compete in Limited. This is just my guess given that the two documentaries nominated this year are either movies, or blur the boundaries of format (OJ)
