“Felina” probably fits better under the divisive category.

“Felina” is maybe the greatest Breaking Bad episode and everybody hates it.

    Neither are true.

I would say that “Felina” is beloved by the online community, but was a bit more divisive in the critical community. It has a 9.9 rating on IMDb, ranking second for the series. It has the highest possible grade from users at The A.V. Club. On Metacritic, it got twenty-five extremely positive reviews, nineteen positive reviews and four mixed reviews.

Casual TV watchers (aka the people who haven’t watched most of the acclaimed dramas) tend to like the episode more. It’s the type of conventionally satisfying finale designed to appease the masses. It does seem that there are far more people willing to be critical of it now than when it first aired. Either way, it still has a great deal of fans.

Also, Breaking Bad has since been widely regarded as a model for others on how to end a show well. I warmed to the episode personally on rewatch.

Mad Men is my favorite show so I will start there:

    Underrated: Far Away Places

This episode was well received but I hardly see it mentioned in any of the MM “best-ofs.” Many lists have “The Other Woman” as the Season 5 standout and while I enjoyed that episode, the run from “Mystery Date” to “Lady Lazarus” was maybe the best run of superb episodes the series ever had and my favorite was “Far Away Places.” The unique structure could have easily derailed the episode but instead re-contextualized and and gave greater meaning to three excellent segments. The best installments of Mad Men mix humor and drama and this episode struck the perfect balance.

“Lady Lazarus” is a close second but it is discussed as a “best of” more often (probably because of the buzziness of the Beatles song at the end).

Hard for me to pick an Overrated….there are definitely installments I didn’t like as much but I never really seemed to veer too far from the critical tide in those instances.

More recently, definitely Veep’s “Camp David” episode from the most recent season – so underrated!

Also criminally underrated – the entirety of, most especially 2nd season of, Difficult People! Why aren’t more people talking about it? This week’s episode, “Hashtag Cats” was one of the funniest 30 minutes of comedy all year.

“Far Away Places” ranks in the top ten episodes on IMDb. It was the only episode from its season nominated for editing and it was also nominated for writing. But it was only in four of the nineteen top-ten lists from the relevant forum thread.

I never hear about “Lady Lazarus” and have no idea what episode that is. It was on only one list, rates only 8.4 on IMDb and got no nominations.

I could see “Lady Lazarus” as underrated. It certainly was one of my few favorites of season five. “Far Away Places” is booty, overrated if anything. Mad Men never did strange/surrealism all that well with maybe the exception of “Seven Twenty Three”, and that episode isn’t all that odd.

“Marriage of Figaro” is one of my favorites, and that hardly ever gets mentioned.
