I’m halfway through the first episode, and is this supposed to be funny?
And yeah I’m 24 and wasn’t even at school yet when this show ended, so it’s true this isn’t exactly my vintage. But in saying that, I watch Bewitched, etc. and laugh my head off. Isn’t good comedy supposed to be timeless?
ReplyCopy URLMarch 29, 2018 at 11:25 pm #1202521634The first episode of the revival or the first episode of the series? I haven’t watched, but I know the first episode of the revival has gotten poor reviews while the consensus is that it improves. If you’re talking about the first run I liked the pilot, but the show doesn’t really come together until season 2. Before then it’s pretty hit and miss.
As far as politics and some of the coo-koo sh*t Roseanne has said throughout the years- well, that’s Roseanne. She was known as a hysterical, paranoid tyrant during the show’s initial run and did and said plenty of things for the sake of being rebel. How she’s evolved really shouldn’t surprise anyone.

ReplyCopy URLMarch 30, 2018 at 2:30 am #1202521692I do think we are overestimating how much they love Laurie. I mean sure she got three awards for Roseanne in its initial run, but afterwards it’s not like they’ve been name-checking her for anything and everything she’s been in.
For instance, someone mentioned how they actually snubbed her for the first two seasons of Getting On (even though the show had started registering on their radar from Season 2 onwards) and she’s been a Guest on TBBT many times before, yet she only got nominated for it once. Her Horace and Pete nomination is certainly indicative of support for her, but let’s not forget how amazing her performance actually was (for me, it was one of the best acting performances of 2016 on any medium).
I guess what I’m trying to say is that, when the quality of the show (and even the performance if the first two episodes are any indicator) isn’t up to the mark on a show that is extremely problematic thanks to its Trump connections, and with a backlash that is only going to get worse, is Metcalf beloved enough to overcome ALL of that to score a nod?
I guess it’ll depend on her performance in the rest of the season. The big plus for her here is massive Lady Bird goodwill she has. I feel like that might be the reason why she gets the nod, and not anything else.

March 30, 2018 at 10:03 pm #1202521948It’s funny how in the 90’s many saw Roseanne as “Liberal propaganda” and representation of the “femi-Nazi” but now some of these same people see it see it as a realistic potrait of blue-collar life. Both things were due to the frontman’s politics.

It’s so weird because last week I found myself watching Michael Moore’s Slacker Uprising and she shows up and speaks at one of his pro-Kerry/anti-Bush rallies basically making fun of who she seems to behave as now.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 31, 2018 at 2:10 am #1202521995There is no way this show gets really noticed by the Emmys. All the Pro-Trump stuff it’s been engulfed by isn’t doing them any favors. Especially how controversial the lead Roseanne Barr has been lately about the MSD shooting. The only thing I can see this getting is a nod for John Goodman.

ReplyCopy URLApril 3, 2018 at 1:50 pm #1202523684Episode Title: “Roseanne Gets the Chair”
Synopsis: Roseanne’s clash with Darlene over how she’s raising her kids, especially Harris, reaches a breaking point; Dan tries to help Roseanne with her bad knee by getting her an elevator chair, which she refuses to use because she doesn’t want to admit getting old.
Discuss.
ReplyCopy URLApril 3, 2018 at 2:07 pm #1202523687The ratings for the second week got me very excited. Any predictions?
ReplyCopy URLApril 3, 2018 at 2:35 pm #1202523691I think, with as much news as the ratings made last week, the story tomorrow will be how much they dropped. They always drop during the second week.
