I finished and I’m…mixed. After really liking episode 1 the series went pretty downhill ultimately leading to 6 and 7 being pretty horrible, but then episode 8 was SO GOOD! Ugh, I’m so coming back, especially because it seems like everything that I thought worked is coming back, and everything that sucked is probably leaving (besides Gwyneth, I hope she comes back but I somehow doubt she signed up for this as a long-term thing). Lange’s character was essentially just written in so Murphy could put Lange (or Streisand) in his project, and like great I guess for writing parts for older women, but spare them if they’re that horribly forced, unfunny, and detracting towards the central narrative/allegory. The twin brother characters/narrative also sucked and was unfunny, I feel like Murphy just wanted eye candy there. But the highschoolers(!!!) were both the funniest and most interesting parts of the show. Platt is fantastic, but no duh. I loved the campaign staffers, obviously it was absurd, but the humor was in the absurdity and both Dreyfus and Germaine played them perfectly. I liked Boynton’s Astrid a lot too, in fact I wish we had spent more time with her family and revealed a further allegory on dirty money/the power of corporations vs. politics. The River character was really mishandled, I wish he came up more to better symbolize Payton’s dying humanity, or rather didn’t do what he did until the final episodes so Payton sees it as more of a consequence. I thought the Alice character worked as the strategizing first lady. Also, I might be skating on thin ice here, but wasn’t Skye open about being gender non-conforming but also identified as a female a few times? Isn’t that contradictory…?

Overall, it was fun, until it got unfunny and stupid, but then it got fun again, so I’ll be back. I feel like Emmy’s aren’t going to love this, but comedy actor is literally so barren that I think Platt is in, but probably not win-competitive. I hope Paltrow, Boynton, or Deutch make it in over Lange, but I doubt any of them do.

Finished the show last night. It really lost whatever entertaining features it had in the first few episodes. They can still find new and exciting talent, that will forever be Murphy’s best ability. They can still have great ideas for shows, nobody can deny that.

But 21 years after Popular, they still can’t get to the middle of any season they do without fucking everything up with their usual mess.

In the end the show was not only a parody of The Act or the Menendez bros, it ended up being a parody of Murphy himself. It was even a parody of Popular, a 21 year old show. As usual, they repeated so many things that have ruined Murphy’s shows before. These people will never understand how lame they are and they will never grow up and grow out of the few tiny things that used to work for them. It’s tiresome. They still haven’t realized that they started this stupidity 21 years ago with Popular and it was only original then. After that they were just repeating shit, and that worked for a bit on Glee because it was like their 3rd show and it was almost 10 years after Popular. So it seemed fresh and funny. But then they started finding success and producing more shows closer together so their style was ruined since they repeated themselves every single time.

There’s really no difference between Murphy and somebody like Chuck Lorre. And yes, that’s an insult.

They’re not even able to see how much they’ve failed recently while trying to copy and repeat themselves. Is Scream Queens still on the air? Is The New Normal on its 7th season or whatever? Did Popular get to a 3rd season? Is AHS as popular as it was before considering every season is “different”. Is anybody outside of their typical dying audience watching this show? No. Enough! Go do something else. Let this talent work with something else, they’re too good to be wasted like this.

This show may only survive because it’s on Netflix. Even FX would’ve canceled it after season 2.

I’m sure the same people are not still writing for him, so it seems like he’s just hiring fanboys at this point. Who else could continue with these crappy decisions?

And what the fuck was Jessica Lange doing here? Easily the worst performance on the show, considering pretty much everybody did a great job. Even the twins were better.

She announced this was her last TV project. I bet she made that decision after seeing herself in this.

it ended up being a parody of Murphy himself.

Murphy needs to take a break from writing, while I enjoyed episode 1 which he wrote I agree that his shtick is incredibly tired, and quite honestly he doesn’t write sustainable characters/stories. He is a much better director. The Murphy work that is proclaimed to be the greatest are the two editions of American Crime Story, which he didn’t write. He just doesn’t write sustainable character’s or plots, as evidenced by Glee after Season 1 (or really Season 1A), Scream Queens season 2, middle episodes of the Politician, The New Normal, etc.

He was not involved in Scream Queens s2 at all, it was all Brad Falchuk.

When it comes to completely original stories Murphy is quite a genius in all genres. Just because The Politician received mixed reviews doesn’t mean he’s not a good writer.

I would agree Murphy is indeed a genius at original ideas, all of his concepts are really fresh and fun, but his execution can often be pretty lackluster. Again, I love his ideas, but if Murphy had a backseat in the writing room for The Politican perhaps, maybe we wouldn’t have a pointless episode in which Payton joins the musical for the sake of wedging in Platt singing a showtune or Lange’s really awful character and B-Plot.

I was wondering what all of you thought of Season 1 Episode 5, “The Voter.” I know a lot of critics called it a standout of the season but I thought it didn’t work at all with the rest of the season and was just sort of thrown in as a last minute ploy to get in some incisive social/political commentary. Maybe it would work if the show were more focused on political commentary but it is so tonally jarring from the rest of the plotlines to me

I agree that it was the best written episode but it didn’t fit in at all with the rest of the series. If they had done more groundwork in the previous episodes honing in on certain arguments then it would serve as a perfect foil to Payton’s myopia, but in the midst of everything that was going on it felt haphazard within the structure of the series

And who on earth could swallow that there would be this much polling data for a high school class president election?

    That’s…the joke?

Interestingly, Murphy was the only one of him, Brennan and Falchuk not to be involved in the writing of the Assassination of Payton Hobart two-parter, which I think most agree to be the weakest of the season and where the show briefly went a bit off the rails.
