Finished. Great show. Only weaker episode was the penultimate one because there was just too little time to process anything. The finale was strong and, like others have said, more subdued which is great but also I really wanted the comedy to return because that’s what I loved the most about this show and what made it so fiercely entertaining. As good as it was, I’d struggle to binge a whole season of that style and pace in the same way that I did with the first 7 episodes of this one.

It’s earlier in the season but Platt should be winning the Globe and the Emmy. I’d also nominate it in Series, Paltrow, Directing (Pilot) and Writing (Pilot) along with so many creative arts categories.

    Now SPOILERS ahead…

So next season we’re getting Judith Light, Bette Midler, Jackie Hoffman and Joe Morton as series regulars? That seems like a damn good swap for Lange and maybe Deutch and Paltrow (though I hope those two return as they, along with Platt, were best in show).

Lange has revealed that she won’t be returning and she is now starring in a 10-part limited series as Marlene Dietrich. Of course, it is produced by Ryan Murphy. Meanwhile, I would say Paltrow is safe to return as she is playing the mother of Ben Platt and her husband is Brad Falchuk.

    I believe it’s a movie, not a limited series.

I liked this. I’m not in love with it, and I’ll probably forget about it in the coming weeks, but it was an entertaining watch. The writing, however, is super messy lol. The tone is indeed all over the place. I wish they just fully leaned into this being an over the top, highly exaggerated look into a high school election. But they tried grounding it at times and it just doesn’t work, except for the finale which I thought was great. My MVP here is Paltrow who I thought was fantastic. She brings such a real, sincere presence to a show in which you don’t really recognize any of the characters as people you see in real life. She also has a couple of scenes that are genuinely moving. I hope she receives some awards recognition. Platt, in my opinion, is baaaad here. Don’t even get me started on the singing lol, it is so out of place. It’s like you’re watching a different show for a second. It’s so obvious the writers (or Platt) tried so hard to find a way to include it. Also, his version of Vienna was awful. As for his performance outside of that, it’s just not good. You see the wheels turning and it’s like we get it, you’re acting. He also doesn’t do a good job with layering his character and getting the audience (at least myself) to sympathize with him. I was 100% pulling for Astrid the entire time lol, maybe because Boynton’s performance gets you to root for her, even though I think Boynton was still really wasted. Lange is fine. She’s so over the top, but I guess it kind of fits the tone of the show. But we’ve seen this exact performance time and time again and it’s already old lol. Deutch was good, but whatever she was trying to do with that voice was not working for me lol. I just thought it was really unnecessary. She’s good at emoting though. Nobody else in the cast is really worth writing home about (at least none that I can think of off the top of my head). That last episode does feature some good guest performances though, and it gives me hope that season 2 will be a step up. Hopefully Platt and his character aren’t as insufferable and just plain annoying to watch though. And please no more singing.

Also – it’s criminal how underused January Jones was. Like, she’s an Emmy nominee. She should not be in that thankless role. Somebody give her something substantial to do on a good show ASAP. Thanks.

I’ve just finished this and I mostly agree with everything that has been said.

I really liked the first episodes but the show kinda dragged a little after that before delivering a pretty good and satisfying season finale. The writing is indeed messy and tries too much at time, but overall I thought it was entertaining and fun, which after all is just what I ask for those kind of shows.

I liked Jessica Lange but her character and storyline were unnecessary and were only enjoyable because she was a part of it. I didn’t really care for Zoey Deutch, what she was trying to do with her voice barely worked for me.

Goop was genuinely great. She had a calm, comforting and loving presence in the show. I also really liked Ben Platt. It seems like his performance is divisive but it really worked for me.

As for the show’s award chances, I think Ben Platt and Gwyneth are safe bets. The latter should be submitted in supporting tho. I also think Judith Light and Bette Midler could happen for guest actress in a comedy. And even if they don’t, they could get nominated in supporting for s2.

The more commercials I see of this, the more I’m convinced this is going to be the Heaven’s Gate of streaming TV. As in one ginormous dumpster fire.

You should watch it before making any opinions on it.

The season 1 finale made me more excited for season 2 since that would mean we get to spend a lot of time with Judith Light and Bette Midler. I love their characters and I want to see more of them.

What a horrific statement… Duetch and Paltrow were in the top 3 of performances! Even though Jessica played the same character she always does in Ryan Murphy shows she still brought her legendaric vibe to the show and I would love to see her in season 2! “That’s what the gays do! Munch Butts and celebrate Halloween” was literally the best line in the entire show

I actually remember when the show was announced and Streisand was to be cast. Was she really going to play the Dusty character? I can’t picture her in this role at all.

She revealed it in her interview with The New Yorker that she was to play the role of Lange but had to drop out because she wanted to prioritize her album. But yeah I couldn’t imagine her playing Dusty as well. But we would never know, maybe it’s something we haven’t seen from her before.

Also, this not so good show debuted in September. Who’s gonna remember this in June? It could be forgotten very soon, even by those who liked it. Specially if the Murphy (and Netflix) supporters will have new (and much better) things to vote for when they debut later in the season. I think this will die after the Globes…if it even gets there.

Tried another couple of episodes to see if I might change my mind, but no. The best an actor can hope for here is to rise above the arch, loopy dialogue—and there are a few deep in the supporting cast who don’t.

And who on earth could swallow that there would be this much polling data for a high school class president election? That’s outlandish even for nonsense like this. This thing misfires worse than Dick Cheney on a hunting weekend.

Though I do think it has an Emmy nom locked up for Main Title Design. 🙄

I finished and I’m…mixed. After really liking episode 1 the series went pretty downhill ultimately leading to 6 and 7 being pretty horrible, but then episode 8 was SO GOOD! Ugh, I’m so coming back, especially because it seems like everything that I thought worked is coming back, and everything that sucked is probably leaving (besides Gwyneth, I hope she comes back but I somehow doubt she signed up for this as a long-term thing). Lange’s character was essentially just written in so Murphy could put Lange (or Streisand) in his project, and like great I guess for writing parts for older women, but spare them if they’re that horribly forced, unfunny, and detracting towards the central narrative/allegory. The twin brother characters/narrative also sucked and was unfunny, I feel like Murphy just wanted eye candy there. But the highschoolers(!!!) were both the funniest and most interesting parts of the show. Platt is fantastic, but no duh. I loved the campaign staffers, obviously it was absurd, but the humor was in the absurdity and both Dreyfus and Germaine played them perfectly. I liked Boynton’s Astrid a lot too, in fact I wish we had spent more time with her family and revealed a further allegory on dirty money/the power of corporations vs. politics. The River character was really mishandled, I wish he came up more to better symbolize Payton’s dying humanity, or rather didn’t do what he did until the final episodes so Payton sees it as more of a consequence. I thought the Alice character worked as the strategizing first lady. Also, I might be skating on thin ice here, but wasn’t Skye open about being gender non-conforming but also identified as a female a few times? Isn’t that contradictory…?

Overall, it was fun, until it got unfunny and stupid, but then it got fun again, so I’ll be back. I feel like Emmy’s aren’t going to love this, but comedy actor is literally so barren that I think Platt is in, but probably not win-competitive. I hope Paltrow, Boynton, or Deutch make it in over Lange, but I doubt any of them do.
