Too soapy and event-driven? Honey, that’s how Grey’s was from day one…. It makes me laugh when people argue that Grey’s was ever anything BUT a soap with a medical backdrop.

Yes, but its soap was more grounded in character in the first 2 1/2 seasons, and its events were mostly fun and well seperated from each other. It’s sorta par for the course with primetime shows that are pure soap operas. The soapy aspects become less easy to relate to, the characters keep having to do more and more silly things to keep the drama high and the events become more ridiculous and predictable.

Sandra Oh overall was superior to Heigl and Wilson and should have been the lone main actor on the series to win an Emmy. Still, I can’t begrudge Heigl’s win. She had a decent tape, and she was mostly good on the show. Yes, I prefer her to Wilson. They’re has been some really poor winners in that category over the years. Heigl is hardly in the bottom teir

Yes, it plays “9 Crimes” and “New Day” at the end.

Grey’s and One Three Hill are the best when it comes to soundtrack. The number of songs I got from watching these..

Anyone who wants to know what Heigl’s episode submission was in 2007, it was the episode “Time After Time”.

That’s huge news. Sandra Oh has consistently been one of the show’s MVPs from start to present. This is a major loss for the series moving forward to whatever it’s going to become now. I do hope that Shonda Rhimes is being genuine and gives Cristina “the exit that she deserves,” but as awful a woman as she is and delights in torturing her characters, I highly doubt it.

^^Haha, I was just thinking about whether she’d kill her off. Let’s see, she’s used hit by a bus, killed in a plane crash, shot by a lunatic. I wonder how Patrick Dempsey’s feeling. Hasn’t he wanted to leave the show for years?

I really hope Shonda can just have Christina move or something. The goodbye episode could be something really good if they get their shit together.

If Dempsey leaves, wouldn’t they have to end the show? I mean, he, Pompeo and Chambers are the only original cast members left. And this isn’t really like E.R. where you can pull off a complete cast change. If Pompeo or Dempsey leave, it wouldn’t make sense to continue, since their relationship has been the point where the show gravitated towards a lot of time (and most of the time in early seasons). With Pompeo there’s also the matter of, well, hum, her being the protagonist (although I wouldn’t put it past Shonda continuing without her).

It would be really messed up to not have the leaving of your titular character signal the end of a program, though I guess they could try for some sort of Scrubs trick and try to continue with a “spin off” season with a new team of characters, ultimately getting cancelled unceremoniously.

Sandra Oh, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr are also originals.

I can’t think of another show in its tenth season that still had six original cast members remaining. That’s quite impressive.

Can they cancel it now? After the last season I was hoping they would give it another season and done.

James Pickens, Jr. could very well be out too, though I doubt it since we would have heard some rumblings about it by now.

Sandra Oh to Leave “Grey’s Anatomy”
by Hillary Busis on Aug 13, 2013 at 5:47 PM
    EW.com

EW can confirm that five-time Emmy nominee Sandra Oh—and onetime Golden Globe winner—Sandra Oh will depart ABC’s venerable medical drama in 2014, after 10 years of playing prickly, brilliant surgeon Cristina Yang.

“It’s been a great privilege to play the character of Cristina Yang on GA and I am both sad and excited to see where this, her final season will take her,” Oh said in a statement. “It was an emotional and deeply creative decision for me and I feel fully supported by Shonda and the writers. It’s so rare in an actor’s life to be able to explore and grow a character so fully, so completely. I am profoundly grateful to everyone at GA for the opportunity.”

“One of the best days of my life as a writer happened the day Sandra Oh walked in my door to audition and forever changed the course of Grey’s Anatomy with her brilliant, nuanced portrayal of Cristina Yang,” series creator Shonda Rhimes added. “Over the past ten seasons, I have been made better by Sandra’s trust, faith, and friendship and I can’t quantify how grateful I am for her collaboration on a character we both love so deeply. This year is going to be bittersweet for us—we’re both going to savor every moment of Cristina Yang and then we’re going to give her the exit she deserves. And when Sandra walks out of my door, Grey’s Anatomy will be once again be forever changed.”

Clearly, the decision didn’t come easily for Oh. “Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go,” Oh told The Hollywood Reporter, which first announced the news. “It’s such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well. [Cristina] wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go. We have to start the process, story-wise, for the Grey’s writers to think of why she’s going to go.”

Grey’s has lost a boatload of series regulars over the past decade, including original cast members Katherine Heigl, T.R. Knight, and Isaiah Washington. Oh’s departure could indicate a coming sea change for the hospital soap; the two-year contracts for original cast members Patrick Dempsey, Ellen Pompeo, Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickens Jr.—whose Dr. Webber may or may not have perished in last year’s finale—are up at the end of the series’ coming 10th season.

But don’t think this means the end of Grey’s altogether: “It’s our intention to have Grey’s on the air for many years to come, with as many of the original cast as possible,” a rep for ABC said in a statement.

I will never get over Katherine Heigl winning over Sandra Oh in 2007. I mean c’mon, Oh submitted “From a Whisper to a Scream”, which I consider to be one of the best episodes of Grey’s, and certainly the best of the season. If anyone from GA needed an Emmy, it is Oh and Wilson, not Heigl.

Both Oh and Heigl deserved to win that year, I do agree that they had both great tapes and would be fine with any of them winning.

I also stopped this after season 7 ended.

The show really lost it when Heigl and T.R. Knight left, they were one of the few things keeping me interested on watching this.

I think this should could survive without Patrick Dempsey, but the loss of Ellen Pompeo would (and should) be the final nail in the coffin.

I really thought they would end it after season 10 because I thought that was the end of Dempsey’s, Pompeo’s, and Oh’s contracts.

I’ve read that Dempsey just wants to be a racecar driver full-time. Pompeo is not an extremely gifted actress, and I’m sure she’s collecting a nice paycheck (same with Dempsey and often for minimal work). Oh, on the other hand, Oh could and should helm her own TV show. I could see her as a cable dramedy lead.
