The ratings for the Keegan-Michael Key show were abysmal— even worse than for Carey Mulligan and Daniel Kuluuya. I don’t understand why Elon Musk was a ratings draw, but given that he was, I suspect that in the future, we may see more hosts who are “celebrities,” but not professional entertainers. Let’s hope neither Mike Lindell nor Jeff Bezos get asked.

Keegan-Michael Key is one of the best sketch comedy artists in the business, and he proved that again tonight. That Michael Jordan one, wow. It would have been nice to get a Jordan Peele cameo or something, but alas. Olivia Rodrigo was great with “drivers license.” I see what the appeal is now, and I’m predicting the song to win a bunch of Grammys next year. The second number sounded like a bad Paramore rip-off, so jury’s out if her breakout is a fluke or not. Fun cold open that might have used the entire ensemble? “Weekend Update” had some good moments too.

I think Cecily, Aidy, Kate, and Pete are leaving (maybe Kenan?).

Definitely feels that way. Glad for one final Jeanine Pirro. Didn’t expect Kenan to be leaving though, it seemed like he was pretty committed to juggling his show and this. It’ll be interesting to see who steps into Kate’s shoes in particular as the go-to.

It does feel like a cast refresh is needed, but there’s some deadwood I’d want to see go over these. The whole point of Mikey Day is literally to just go “oh wow, hijinks!”

    FYC:
Ego Nwodim ("SNL"), Nico Santos ("Superstore"), Lolly Adefope ("Shrill"), MJ Rodriguez ("Pose"), Kate Winslet, Julianne Nicholson ("Mare of Easttown"), Punam Patel ("Special")

Miss Anya did that! Incredible comic timing throughout. Who knew she would be this good at sketch comedy? She can get double Emmy nominations this year, and this would be an easy place to do that. Maybe I would have wanted to see her in one more sketch? Some ran longer than they should have, but I liked the energy in the room with the studio audience back. I hope there aren’t too many cast exits, but people have to move on from “SNL” eventually, I guess. Unless Kenan just decides to stick around until the show ends lol. “Weekend Update” was fantastic. Cecily Strong might have secured her Emmy nomination with her crazy Jeanine Pirro. Colin and Michael swapping jokes at the end is one of my favorite gags of the year, and they didn’t disappoint. As for Lil Nas X, yeah. All of that bluster for two inane songs that didn’t really go anywhere great. Impactful with the bulleted white suit, but frankly, Symone did that far better on “Drag Race.” I chuckled at the musical equipment that wasn’t used at all in the first number, but I imagine it had to stay in place electronically for the second number. Pretty strong finale, and Chris Rock was a fun cameo. I expected a few more stunts here and there, but there’s always next year!
