Great choice to start off the season. Wonder if Rock will get double nominations next year.
Maybe but I’d argue his nomination for this is safer than his one for Fargo considering the mixed reception this season has received and how the acting categories for Limited Series are packed

Can’t wait to see what Alec Baldwin does on Saturday night!October 2, 2020 at 1:34 pm #1203753663
Fingers crossed Baldwin ends up losing his job on SNL this season!

They have no idea what they’re doing with Trump, Biden and Harris. Terrible writing for these three characters. At least Fineman got a chance to shine.October 4, 2020 at 9:35 am #1203758683
I actually thought Carrey was quite bad, and even Rudolph wasn’t her best self as Kamala. Something just felt off.October 4, 2020 at 10:17 am #1203758805
This was an awesome season opener. My grade is A. Would Have Been A+ BUT the one about the basketball draft was just weird didn’t like that at all. My fav moment wasOctober 4, 2020 at 10:26 am #1203758844
Not a great start. A few decent jokes here and there, but this didn’t click. That opening debate set the tone for an overall very rocky episode. The timing was very off, the editing was bad, and all four actors lacked chemistry with each other. Having Carrey repeat Biden’s “shut up man” verbatim just illustrates that SNL has trouble representing the sheer out there nature of today’s batshit insane politics. I can cut them some slack though, as it’s hard to parody something that already felt like an SNL parody.
I was genuinely looking forward to Carrey, but I didn’t care for him too much. I feel like he has the makings of a good Biden, maybe it was just the material that didn’t serve him well. I’ll maybe reserve judgement for later, hopefully he has more to work with. Rudolph was fine, but she was better before. Her appearance here just felt super shoehorned in, so she had little to work with. Baldwin’s Trump is the same as it’s been for last few years. He can get a chuckle, but it just feels tired. I miss Darrell Hammond’s version.
Chris Rock was okay. His opening monologue felt like he was being kept on a leash. I just wanted to see him go all out, but it never happened. I couldn’t help but feel like a great talent was being wasted last night.
Speaking of lack of presence, I was surprised a how little Kate McKinnon there was last night. Given there were rumors about her leaving last year, I get the feeling she’ll be appearing less frequently and probably stuck around just to have a normal season be her swan song.
If I’m right and McKinnon is less in the spotlight this year, I hope that can open up doors for underused players, specifically Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman. Those two regularly shine, lighting up the screen, even when they’re not in good sketches. Fineman’s Drew Barrymore sketch was a big highlight of the evening, and Yang continues to make a meal out of Chen Biao of all people.
On the flip side, please fire Pete Davidson. He’s so bad at keeping up character that they’re literally resorting to casting him in a role where all he has to do is laugh.
Finally shoutout to Weekend Update. A few years back, I wasn’t into Jost and Che too much, but they’ve both improved substantially, and they really work nicely off of each other. Their segment has been the most consistently strong element of show recently for me. Here’s hoping the keep up the good work. And here’s hoping this season can improve.

To be fair I don’t blame McKinnon for hardly being there when she is about to start shooting two high profile Limited Series (The Dropout was about to start shooting before the lockdown and has been promised by Hulu for the Spring 2021 season and her Carole Baskin show is starting production around January).
