(CNN) “Sex and the City” will return to the screen, 17 years after its last episode aired, HBO Max has confirmed.
Titled “And Just Like That…”, the reboot will star three of the four original leads of the hit ’90s show, with Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis set to reprise the roles of Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte.
Kim Cattrall, who starred as Samantha in the original show, won’t return for the rebooted series, which will be executive-produced by Parker, Davis, Nixon, and Michael Patrick King.
Described by HBO Max as a “new chapter” of the hit ’90s and ’00s show, the 10-episode series will follow Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte as they navigate their life in their 50s, and is scheduled to begin production in New York in spring.
The show was green-lit by HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s streaming service, launched last year. WarnerMedia is the parent company of CNN.
Stars Parker, Nixon, and Davis all teased a trailer for the new series to their Instagram pages, though the preview, which featured shots of New York City alongside the text “And just like that… the story continues…” gave little detail about potential story lines for the women.
Based on the book by Candace Bushnell, the groundbreaking HBO series about four friends living in New York City premiered on HBO on June 6, 1998 and ran until 2004. Subsequent movies were released in 2008 and 2010.January 11, 2021 at 11:06 am #1203976688
I really hope it is as good as the original series (althoug I will miss Samantha)January 11, 2021 at 11:24 am #1203976740
I’m glad Kim Cattrall is not returning. I don’t support giving roles to Polanski defenders.
It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!January 11, 2021 at 11:45 am #1203976809
I remember when talk of the third film surfaced, supposedly it was going to open with Samantha’s funeral (I’m guessing a cancer reoccurrence), and that would be the springboard for what followed. I wonder if that approach, or something similar, will happen here. It’ll royally piss off Kim Cattrall, which might make SJP want to do it even more lol.January 11, 2021 at 1:11 pm #1203977411
It was reported that all 3 ladies will be executive producers and make $1 million dollars each per episode with 10 episodes in total.
Imagine being so bitter and hating your cast mates or a role so much that has given you so much that you are willing to reject $10 million and producer credit. Like… huh???January 11, 2021 at 1:19 pm #1203977467

Tim Van Patten and Sarah Jessica Parker did such a good job on the original series finale. The show’s legacy has been transformed with the movies that have been entirely commercial ventures. Like most reboots, there is not really a good creative reason to do this and the writers have not gone onto better things in the meantime. There is actually a good creative reason not to do this, since they are changing the DNA of the show. So this is going to go the way of most of the other revivals, getting lukewarm reviews and being an afterthought to the Emmys. Will be easy viewing though.January 11, 2021 at 3:38 pm #1203977805

To be it seems kind of admirable for her to turn down all that money for something she doesn’t feel will be creatively fulfilling. The reason she has always given for not returning is that she doesn’t have any desire to return to the character.January 11, 2021 at 6:29 pm #1203978182
It won’t be the same without Samatha. She’s the “sex” in the show’s title.
I came across the episode where Carrie meets a cute black sailor. For whatever reason, Carrie didn’t even kiss him. It didn’t strike me as odd then. But now, I feel like it was on purpose. SJP hides her ish well. And I suspect that she wasn’t entirely happy with Kim being the breakout star.January 11, 2021 at 7:04 pm #1203978249
The feud between Parker and Cattrall is the central reason for Cattrall’s absence. She isn’t above paycheck roles or cares too much about Samantha’s continued character development, I think.January 12, 2021 at 2:15 am #1203978895
I didn’t care for all the behind the scenes drama. I’ll watch the show, hoping it returns to some semblance of its former self, but I’m skeptical.January 12, 2021 at 5:59 am #1203979140
I don’t know but I want them to have Tiffany Haddish as “new” friend.
I read somewhere that people were suggesting Jennifer Coolidge to do Samantha. But I don’t think that the character should be replaced nor I think it’s fair. …. With that being said I would like to see Jennifer Coolidge in this.

This could work if the writing is strong and the storylines are realistic and engaging. Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda are interesting people in their own right and just need to have stories that reflect what life is like as fifty-something married women in NYC. Hopefully, the writer who penned the script for the second movie is not involved with this project. Although the first movie was decent, the problem with taking this series to the big screen is it works best in short 25 minute episodes. Same with Entourage – the Sex and the City for men.
About Samantha. Yep, you could say she was the sex in the city, but each of the women had plenty afternoon, evening and morning delights. Let’s be real. It will be interesting to see how the show fares without her, but it can work. I mean, Samantha did have one of the worst storylines – think three or four episodes as a lesbian. Not believable at all. Samantha give up men? Hated that. Then, on the other side, her bout with breast cancer was one of the most interesting written storylines. I just hope she hasn’t died in the reboot. That would suck.
I’ll guess we will see. I’ll definitely give it a look.January 12, 2021 at 12:58 pm #1203980121

Showrunner Michael Patrick King was head writer, lead director and executive producer of the series, so you have to take the good with the bad. Although he will be working on this, they are apparently getting a new showrunner, which is odd.January 12, 2021 at 2:49 pm #1203980267

I doubt Sarah Jessica Parker used her power as a producer of her own series to showcase that she would not kiss a black man. At least I certainly hope she wouldn’t!
It’s also worth noting that Parker has worked constantly in the industry for over 35 years and Cattrall is literally the only person to have ever said a bad word about her. I’ve also never heard of her behaving in any way disrespectful to anybody and is by all accounts lovely to crew members, colleagues, fans and strangers. Not to discredit Kim Cattrall, she seems very cool in real life too, but isn’t it a little telling that the rest of the cast (and Jason Lewis who interacted with Kim most) have all sided with Parker? If she was really a nightmare, why would they have stood by her when this all happened well before the reboot was being discussed?
I’ve never seen SATC but enjoy both actors in other projects- Parker was excellent in Divorce.
