Premise: Based on Leigh Bardugo’s worldwide bestselling Grishaverse novels, Shadow and Bone finds us in a war-torn world where lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is torn from everything she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. But as she struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be one and the same and that nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. There are dangerous forces at play, including a crew of charismatic criminals, and it will take more than magic to survive.

It now ties ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Behind Her Eyes’ at #10.

ReplyCopy URLMay 1, 2021 at 7:42 am #1204238077This show is actually incredible! I would NEVER have thought that this show would be this good with incredible VFX, violence (I thought it was a kid’s show), romance, great actors and exciting story. Can’t wait for season 2!
ReplyCopy URLMay 1, 2021 at 8:46 am #1204238102This is massively overrated, IMO. Pacing is off, there are too many characters, and you can feel that there are 2 stories that don’t gel at all. The Crows have no real impact on the Grishas, and SPOILER the heist added up to absolutely nothing. Everything that happened could have happened without the heist.SPOILER END
Some characters also make zero sense. SPOILER Inej doesn’t want to kill cause religion but kills anyway but doesn’t want to but carries 100 knives with her for chopping lettuce? There’s absolutely no logic to be armed to your teeth like that and claim you don’t want to kill. SPOILER END The actress is actually quite good, very pretty and likable so she does what she can with this inconsistent character but that’s some really poor writing.
Lead actress is very cute, does the job with thinly written Chosen One character, nothing really to see there. The actor who plays Mal is atrocious and his character is the weakest link. The show stops cold when it cuts to him.
MVP is Barnes by default of having the most interesting character (not hard cause no one is really interesting) and the striking look to pull off the hot dark brooding villain which is the favorite villain kind in YA genre.
So yeah, I don’t think this is a huge step above Netflix’s usual fantasy fare. It has better universe building for sure but all the same cliches and tropes we’ve seen 1000 times over. And mostly inexperienced cast that gives very uneven performances.
Emmy’s must be really desperate to attract audiene if they nominate this and F&TWS. Not gonna save poor ratings cause pandering to GOT didn’t save them either and that show was more popular than all shows combined.

my understanding is that Inej is new to this, given the crows part of the storyline is a prequel at this point. by the time we meet her in SoC, she’s been working with Kaz for longer.

ReplyCopy URLMay 8, 2021 at 2:33 am #1204246690I don’t understand the hype. I finished season 1 but it was a struggle. Alina is a terrible main character and she has no growth throughout the season. The last few minutes where she SPOIlERS stands up to Kirigan END SPOILERS felt forced and unearned. Mal is the worst and it doesn’t help that the actor is not interesting to watch. It does some good world building and is overall well made but there is so much happening and yet none of what happens actually adds up to much. I doubt I’ll watch Season 2 and I highly doubt the Emmys will nominate this for anything beyond the crafts.
