The television debut for Spike Lee is released today, on Thanksgiving, with a 78 on metacritic (one point less than the original movie).

The pilot was interesting. Most of it didn’t work for me but I have to admire the risky creative decisions that were taken. A lot of this was very on the nose and almost cheesy. I did really enjoy DeWanda Wise, who has a very powerful and engaging persona. My favorite of the three guys was Mars, played by Anthony Ramos. Their sex scenes were easily the most entertaining parts of the episode. Visually, the show was very inspired and at times gorgeous to look at. Spike Lee had a bit of Kanye syndrome; When Wise’s character goes on a rant about Denzel loosing the Oscar for Malcom X, directed by Spike Lee, I laughed so hard. I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or roll my eyes. The editing was interesting to say the least. As I sad, a lot of this didn’t work, but it was bold, and that makes me want to keep watching.

Have you seen the original movie? It was a dry remake with hash tag social media social justice warrior talking points about sexual liberation feminism.

I saw the original a long, long time ago. As I said, I didn’t like most of the pilot, and it was mostly the inspired visuals and engaging lead that kept me interested.

I don’t really like this show but I keep watching it. However, the butt injection scene in the fifth episode was very disturbing and well done. It was the best scene from the show so far.
