Most people are predicting that Watchmen will do well at the Emmys given it’s huge acclaim and seemingly strong industrial support. But people still don’t seem to agree whether it’s going into Drama Series or Limited Series? Where do you think it belongs?
I say Limited Series. While there were rumors of a second season, they were never confirmed, and it was said early on before the show had completed its run that it was written as a one season, self contained story. To me, it sounds like the show was made as a miniseries that they were possibly considering turning into a several season show but decided against it. Because of that, I think it should be considered eligible as a Limited Series, especially since that’ll help it avoid internal competition from Succession and other HBO Drama Series contenders.

Tactically it should go Drama. It belongs in Limited, however.February 17, 2020 at 1:03 pm #1203349794
especially since that’ll help it avoid internal competition from Succession and other HBO Drama Series contenders.
HBO has 7 limited series contenders even without Watchmen and The Outsider. In drama, Big Little Lies and Westworld should worry about internal competition. By the way, I think that Watchmen would do just fine in either of the categories.
Also, it was just last year that Bodyguard competed as a drama series and a second season is unlikely in the upcoming years.February 17, 2020 at 1:13 pm #1203349803
Besides the fact it’s indeed a Limited Series and should be competing as such without any category frauds HBO love so much, the Drama categories are locked and safe for Succession (at least the majority of them including the top prize), so it will be wiser for HBO to send it as a limited series in any caseFebruary 17, 2020 at 1:27 pm #1203349815
From a purely tactical point of view, it makes sense for HBO to remain in drama. Most of the dramas (sans Westworld, Killing Eve and Ozark) have released/aired already, and Watchmen has outperformed almost all of them at the guilds. However, many of the major limited series contenders have yet to be released, and can potentially steal Watchmen’s thunder. It has proven to be a viable drama contender, and moving to a field where it is unproven is more of a risk. I don’t think it will matter that much in the end though – Series, Writing and Directing nominations are locked both in Limited and Drama. I think it’s a big contender to win Directing, and has a chance in Actress/Supporting Actress.
I’m more intrigued by The Outsider’s placement. I suspect HBO will submit it in the opposite field to Watchmen.
For Your Consideration:
Best International Feature: Instinct (The Netherlands)
Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)February 17, 2020 at 1:54 pm #1203349837
Even if there is going to be a second season it’ll be a new story so it’s unfair for other shows to Watchmen competing in drama.February 17, 2020 at 2:29 pm #1203349844
I’d rather it go Limited as there are more drama contenders that I’m rooting for Nominations compared to limited
FYC 2020 EMMYS
COMEDY- SCHITTS CREEK in all categories, Maya Rudolph, Eddie Murphy
DRAMA- Killing Eve in all categories, HBC, Cicely Tyson, The Crown in directing
LIMITED- UNBELIEVABLE, Normal People in writing and directing, Toni Collette, Tituss Burgess
FYC OSCARS- Amy AdamsFebruary 17, 2020 at 11:20 pm #1203350202
Just so Hong Chau can get nominated, I’d rather see it stay in drama.February 18, 2020 at 3:29 pm #1203351150
HBO is going to be facing internal competition in both categories regardless of where they slot Watchmen.
While I am a big fan of the show, I’m a lot less optimistic about its chance at the Emmys than most here. I think it’s probably a tad bit too visceral and sci-fiy to get any sort of wide recognition.
But I think it would have more chances is Limited so I hope they go there. As the probably will.February 19, 2020 at 10:25 am #1203352022
Since it is a limited series I would prefer that it compete there.February 21, 2020 at 10:47 pm #1203356049
It should compete in the Limited category, where I think it would stand a better chance of being nominated (particularly Regina King who seems to do amazingly well in those categories). Plus it’s, y’know, an actual limited series.February 22, 2020 at 5:02 am #1203356221
Good. Go limited. If it comes back years from now and is telling the same story, it’ll go drama. A new story would only qualify for an anthology and limited if the characters were entirely different, and that’s not what this is. At least it’s staying true to the spirit of the category. I hope they wait a good distance outside of Emmy nods to announce though, if they do a second season fast.February 22, 2020 at 5:30 am #1203356228
Limited Series and Lead Actress Limited are going to be so competitve.February 22, 2020 at 7:30 am #1203356319
Even if there is going to be a second season it’ll be a new story so it’s unfair for other shows to Watchmen competing in drama.
But it is in the same world with the same events, very likely for character returns, so it’s not a true anthology. Similar to AHS: Apocalypse in drama
