The lack of love for Westworld is telling though about how it will do. It’s such a great timing for GOT to not be eligible, leaves an open race for an Emmy-friendly show and a loved-genre show.

I think a key indicator was Hopkins and Wright/Harris never being in awards contention despite having the show’s meatiest roles.

    For Your Consideration:

Best International Feature: Instinct (The Netherlands)
Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)

Stranger Things does have it’s PGA + SAG stat which is pretty amazing, but watch out for three things –

    1. The Crown was snubbed at PGA altogether, and most agree that was because of it’s late premiere (and not because it doesn’t have the support). Strangers Things pulled of a jaw dropper when it defeated Game of Thrones (and that signifies a lot of support), but it didn’t defeat The Crown here and if it were nominated, perhaps The Crown would have won? Or maybe it would have made the race competitive enough by splitting the vote with Strangers Things for Thrones to have won? So the PGA win really needs to be taken into context.

    2. Now as far as the SAG win is concerned, The Crown did win two individual SAG awards, which is an incredibly huge achievement for a new first season show at SAG. Some may argue that Foy won because of a vote-split between Ryder and Brown (and that might be the case), but she did defeat heavy-weights like Wright and Newton despite being a no-name. And Ligthgow defeated Spacey. That, again, signifies support.

    3. Stranger Things did win the Ensemble award over the Crown, but the SAG ensemble award can be a tricky precursor to look at. They love rewarding children based ensembles at SAG – Little Miss Sunshine, Slumdog Millionaire, Glee, even Modern Family to an extent – and don’t forget the countless nods that child actors get in individual acting categories all the time. That is why I even predicted it to win here. Also the vote split argument cuts both ways, if Foy was helped by a vote split between Brown and Ryder, maybe Stranger Things was helped by a vote split between The Crown and Downtown Abbey?

So yeah, Stranger Things is really strong, but I’d still put money on The Crown.

Stranger Things will never, ever be a Drama Series lock at the Emmys. The Crown also strikes me as far more traditionally Emmy-friendly, for what it’s worth.
