They should try and push Anderson lead for Sex Education.

Before Netflix FYC page fixed itself and temporarily had Anderson, Gatwa & Mackey in lead. It wouldn’t have been foolish to assume that was so they could get Anderson double-nom’d at the Globes (avoid competing with herself for The Crown).

I think Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is likelier than Space Force here.

Zoey oddly benefits from being a weekly-airing / network show in the streaming age. It’s high concept enough for it to build new fans over the weeks it’s on, if it had dropped on Netflix in the beginning of February I’d doubt anyone would even be considering it for awards contention.

It might have been that they were listed like that by default because maybe that was how they were campaigned most recently, i.e. for the Globes a few months ago.

Yes, but the Globes should really be nominating Emma Mackey in lead.  They are supposedly champions of breakthrough work like that.

How fascinating that The Crown’s season four release could mean that both of its recent seasons could be in contention back-to-back-to-back when it comes to the next several awards.

This will sound biased due to the fact I am a massive fan of the show but is it possible that the Globes might go out of the way and surprisingly nominate Doctor Who? I heard its base has increased massively due to the fact it is now on HBO Max and considering a lot of shows like Succession are ineligible it wouldn’t surprise me if Jodie Whittaker for example slipped into the barren field.

FYC Emmys : THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL, SUCCESSION AND THE CROWN IN ALL CATEGORIES. Tony Shalhoub ("Maisel"), Cate Blanchett ("Mrs. America"), Matthew Macfadyen, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook ("Succession"), Tracey Ullman ("Mrs. America") and Louis Gossett Jr. ("Watchmen")

I suspect one of The Undoing and Stateless will end up like Sharp Objects and Unbelievable here and the other will end up like Escape at Dannemora.

I suspect if Mrs. America wins the Emmy it wins here otherwise I’d say my dismissal of The Undoing and Stateless may have been quite premature.

FYC Emmys : THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL, SUCCESSION AND THE CROWN IN ALL CATEGORIES. Tony Shalhoub ("Maisel"), Cate Blanchett ("Mrs. America"), Matthew Macfadyen, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook ("Succession"), Tracey Ullman ("Mrs. America") and Louis Gossett Jr. ("Watchmen")

    • Didn’t know about The Mayor.
    • Will move Maslany down.
    • Boys release date was announced 3 months in advance. After Homecoming S2 failed commercially, it feels like it’ll be Amazon’s #1.
    • Schwimmer is mostly namecheck pick, is UK made & can always be moved to NBC if they made post-covid content.
    • Giri/Haji is a NGNG pick
    • The Good Fight being free on YouTube and the premiere episode being a “explains America” that HFPA loves on the film side.

If Stateless ends up being a hit in the States and/or Blanchett and Strahovski win at the Emmys for their respective shows this year I wouldn’t be surprised if the Globes did what the Emmys did in 2019 with Patricia Arquette and give Blanchett the Supporting win and Strahovski the Lead win.

FYC Emmys : THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL, SUCCESSION AND THE CROWN IN ALL CATEGORIES. Tony Shalhoub ("Maisel"), Cate Blanchett ("Mrs. America"), Matthew Macfadyen, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook ("Succession"), Tracey Ullman ("Mrs. America") and Louis Gossett Jr. ("Watchmen")

I had a look at the breakthrough of when nominees for Limited Series and Drama Series premiered when nominated :

    LIMITED SERIES/MOVIE

    – 2015 : May, March, October, October, November

    – 2016: February, January, May, April, June

    – 2017: February, April, March, August, September

    – 2018: January, January, November, July, June

    – 2019: May, May, April, June, September

One thing to note here is how since 2016 all of the winners of Limited Series/Movie were the incumbent Emmy winners and how there has always been a nominee from a Summer programme. Since 2017 we have seen at least two programs nominated that were eligible for the following Emmys cycle.

What it will be interesting to see is where the HFPA decides to go with this award if Mrs America loses at the Emmys. After all they have been able to award the incumbent Emmy winner every year for the past four years. Perhaps we’ll see a similar situation to 2015 where the winner was an Emmy nominee (could be Mrs. America, could be Normal People or could even be Little Fires Everywhere or even Defending Jacob).

I think the trend of the popularity of Summer/Autumn series here bodes well for The Undoing (which unless it bombs is pretty much a lock here) and also Stateless (which could be Netflix’s big push here).

With all of these in mind I have decided to update my Limited/Movie predictions accordingly:

LIMITED SERIES/MOVIE : Little Fires Everywhere, Mrs. America, Normal People, Stateless, The Undoing (SPOILER: Boys, The Comey Rule, Defending Jacob, Hollywood, I May Destroy You, The Plot Against America, The Third Day, Unorthodox)

ACTRESS: Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Yvonne Strahovski, Kerry Washington, Reese Witherspoon (SPOILER: Michaela Coel, Michelle Dockery, Shira Haas, Keeley Hawes)

ACTOR: Chris Evans, Hugh Grant, Jude Law, Paul Mescal, Mark Ruffalo (SPOILER: Faysaal Bazi, Jeff Daniels, Brendan Gleeson, Morgan Spector, Jeremy Pope, Olly Alexander)

DRAMA SERIES (GG win in bold and incumbent Emmy winner in italics):

2015 – June, March, April, August, April

2016 – NovemberApril, July, September, October

2017 – April, December, July, October, September

2018 – March, October, November, April, June

2019 – August, June, November, April, November

Worth noting here that the winners of this category have either gone on to become the frontrunner for the Emmy (The Crown s1, Succession s2), were the frontrunner for the Emmy and were given an award by the Globes to show they recognise talent before the Emmys (The Americans) or won the Emmy (The Handmaid’s Tale).

Unless anything comes up in the next few months expect this race to be The Crown vs Ozark.

What’s also interesting is how Netflix has never missed here for a post May series since 2015 (which kind of means The Crown or Ratched (if it comes out on time) are locked). What is also interesting is how HBO has never missed here apart from 2018 where it had a series under the bubble (Succession) and a sophomore season bombing at the precursors (Westworld). Unless The Outsider bombs or Perry Mason loses buzz expect one of them to land here.

My predictions are updated accordingly :

DRAMA SERIES – The Crown, The Outsider, The Mandalorian, Ozark, Perry Mason (SPOILER: The Alienist, Better Call Saul, The Boys, Brave New World, Gangs of London, Killing Eve, Lovecraft Country, Outlander)

ACTRESS – Catriona Balfe, Olivia Colman, Jodie Comer, Laura Linney, Jurnee Smollett-Bell (SPOILER: Jessica Brown Findlay, Viola Davis, Dakota Fanning, Mandy Moore, Sandra Oh)

ACTOR – Jason Bateman, Jonathan Majors, Ben Mendelsohn, Tobias Menzies (or Josh O’Connor), Matthew Rhys (SPOILER: Pedro Pascal, Daniel Bruhl, Bob Odenkirk, Alden Eihenrich, Joe Cole)

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A SERIES OR MOVIE – Gillian Anderson, Tatiana Maslany, Annie Murphy, Sarah Paulson, Rhea Seehorn (SPOILER : Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Cynthia Erivo, Julia Garner, Holly Hunter, Cherry Jones, Asher Keddie, Patti LuPone, Margo Martindale, Janet McTeer, Fiona Shaw, Tracey Ullman

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A SERIES OR MOVIE – Dan Levy, Josh O’Connor, Tom Pelphrey, John Slattery, Donald Sutherland (SPOILER: Jonathan Banks, Jason Bateman, Jai Courtney, Joshua Jackson, John Lithgow, Harry Lloyd, Jaeden Martell, Jim Parsons, Edgar Ramirez, J.K. Simmons, Dominic West)

FYC Emmys : THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL, SUCCESSION AND THE CROWN IN ALL CATEGORIES. Tony Shalhoub ("Maisel"), Cate Blanchett ("Mrs. America"), Matthew Macfadyen, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook ("Succession"), Tracey Ullman ("Mrs. America") and Louis Gossett Jr. ("Watchmen")
