Westworld: “The Original” (Paul Cameron)December 8, 2016 at 7:19 pm #1201965264I was so excited for more guild nominations after WGA and ASC the very next day, but it turns out that we have to wait a month for the next set.
Of course the cinematographers guild nominated All the Way and snubbed everything that was nominated over it at the Emmys. How was The Night Of nominated, but not for Robert Elswit’s pilot? At least “Battle of the Bastards” was nominated over “Home”, unlike at the Emmys. House of Cards is nominated for the same episode as at the Emmys.
Mr. Robot is on the cinematography board after being snubbed by the guild and the Emmys last year. Here is a place for Outlander to expand into at the Emmys.
The Harley and the Davidsons cinematographer upset very deservedly for the short-lived Hunted a few years ago, so watch out for him. The ASC is prone to surprises.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 9, 2016 at 8:14 am #1201965450Citations for Mr. Robot and Outlander by the cinematographers are richly deserved! I wish those two would have had a better showing in the techs last year at the Emmys. I am really pessimistic about Mr. Robot’s chances this coming cycle which is a shame because, opinions about the narrative aside (even though personally I loved it), I think it is an undeniably beautifully made show that deserves recognition for its artful filmmaking.
I could see Outlander continue to be a consistent contender in the production design and costume fields as well as expanding in a few more places. I would love to see it dip back into the music fields like it did in season one.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 9, 2016 at 12:46 pm #1201965649As for the casting nominations, that guild previously broke down their nominations into pilots and series, so we used to see a lot of new shows nominated in both categories. That is no longer possible with the new breakdown of first seasons versus older shows.
How did Veep miss a casting nomination for the likes of Girls? That is a major snub. I am at a loss here. This looks like an easy repeat win for Transparent. This is the second year that Modern Family has missed; it has to be out of casting at the next Emmys, right?
Pretty bad that Master of None could not get a nomination in the new comedy category, especially considering what got in. Maybe it really is just a few branches carrying it at the Emmys. That category is wide open. I guess Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has the edge?
Of course the second season of American Crime continues to be overlooked, although its casting is exactly what should be recognized.
The Americans really is on the rise; this is its first nomination in the series category. What is with the love for Bloodline? It is two for two in the series category. This looks like an easy repeat win for Game of Thrones.
Orange is the New Black was still being nominated in comedy here last year and it has survived the jump to drama. Empire and The Good Wife got the boot. House of Cards holds on. Better Call Saul continues its spotty industry run.

January 7, 2017 at 11:34 pm #1201981918Yeah, it seems that tonight was the Los Angeles edition of the “bake-off” and voting. I had no idea that they had such a rigorous nomination process. Good for them!
I am so impressed with the performance of The Night Of. It got off to a bumpy start with those ridiculous “Critics’ Choice” Awards, but it has not yet been snubbed by a single guild. (It missed CSA, but was did not air in their eligibility period.) It got a production design nomination over Roots and even The Night Manager. Even American Crime Story missed ASC.
You could say that Stranger Things is doing better than Westworld. It got two nominations at ACE. It got two individual nominations at SAG, even though one was a child. Westworld only got Thandie Newton, even though they also had several supposedly competitive men. Westworld only got one ADG nomination, even though they were the rare show to make a second submission. The ADG would rather nominate the just-released second season of The Man in the High Castle than Westworld twice. When is that kind of thing ever the case when the industry likes something?
Look at Mozart in the Jungle becoming a reliable below-the-line performer like Amazon brethren The Man in the High Castle. Mom is out of ADG for Baby Daddy, which has apparently aired five seasons.
