I know Philip is a controversial character on The Crown, but can we all agree that it’s nice to see him and Elizabeth happy together? That closing scene of them together in “Coup” was so sweet, I thought.

    Just reached episode 4.

    1) Best episode of the season so far. The first to show the nuance of season two.

    2) How have I barely heard anyone talking about Jane Lapotaire? She was utterly incredible. Might just be the best guest performance I’ve seen in years if we hadn’t also had Anna Maxwell Martin this year.

Half way through now and I think I’m cementing my view on Colman. When she’s given dramatic material she’s flawless and a privilege to watch. But when her scenes are just everyday life, she often seems more Olivia Colman than Elizabeth II. She smiles too much and comes across very giddy and lacking in regality. It’s not a big issue but it does make it hard for me to endeavour with my view of not comparing her to Foy, who oozed the right balance of authority and plainess in equal measure.

I just finished episode 7, and so far I’ve had trouble sitting through both Episodes 5 and 7. 3, 4 and 6 have been highlights so far.

Umbridge!!! What a trio of legends, but does Staunton look that much older than Colman?

I just looked it up, and Christ, I love Olivia Colman, but she looks so damn old for her age.

Imelda Staunton is a great choice if the reports are true. I said to myself that, by S5 and S6, it could go to either Staunton or Kristin Scott Thomas.

Can’t believe I went into this season thinking when’s HBC gonna have her “Beryl” moment and all along Peter Morgan had given it to Josh O’Connor. What a goddamn performance in “Tywysog Cymru”.

The final scene in episode 8 is astonishing, the wife crying just broke my heart, master class in acting.

Also, Jane Lapotaire deserves an Emmy.

    Netflix has denied it.

I agree. Both would be fantastic choices. I also think Julie Walters would be a very good choice.

Relax. She’s going to have her ‘Beryl’ moment. The 10th episode ‘Cri de Coeur’ is an amazing showcase for HBC. It will be her submission for sure.

I finished watching the season this afternoon and i have a lot to talk about. I personally think season 2 remains the best but this one is very good as well. The ensemble continues to be one of the best in TV history. Simply marvelous. I think right now we have four frontrunners in the guest categories. Josh O’Connor and Charles Dance (Guest Drama Actor) and  Jane Lapotaire and Geraldine Chaplin (Guest Drama Actress). They were simply outstanding. I think their submissions (if they’re all nominated – they truly deserve it) will ep.6,5,4 and 8, respectively. HBC was still my MVP after the last episode but Olivia and Tobias were just as good. But she really was underused. And kudos to Tobias for making me care for Philip for once. I also didn’t particularly liked Emerald Fennell but i will wait for season 4 to make a full statement. Erin Doherty was really outstanding as Princess Anne. Really excited to see more of her in the future. If i had to guess the Directing and Writing submissions, i think they’ll go with ‘Aberfan’ or ‘Bubbikins’ for Directing and ‘Tywysog Cymru’ or ‘Moondust’ for Writing.

My ranking of the episodes (personal opinion):

    1. Aberfan
    2. Tywysog Cymru
    3. Bubbikins
    4. Cri de Coeur
    5. Dangling Man
    6. Imbroglio
    7. Margaretology
    8. Moondust
    9. Olding
    10. Coup

Olivia and Tobias playing them with that much tenderness was the most unexpected and pleasant surprise of season 3. Relieved that they finally dropped Philip perpetually blaming his woes on her, and they were largely in tune with and actively attentive to each other. The number of small scenes where it was just them hanging out with each other with their corgis with no children in sight lol.

I think it goes to a major theme of the season, that Elizabeth and Phillip are older and more comfortable in their roles as royalty. They aren’t butting heads against the institutions, or each other, nearly as much and are more comfortable openly talking about it. Colman and (especially) Menzies are terrific at embodying this new maturity in contrast to Foy and Smith (who were fantastic, but in very different situations).
