I really hate to say it as this is pretty much my favourite show on TV but the premiere was kind of a mess. The spy storyline built in a really odd manner and other character involvements such as Maragret’s just felt shoehorned in because those characters had to be in the premiere to allow the audience to begin to adjust. Some of the dialogue was also very heavy handed which isn’t like Morgan.

Cast-wise, Menzies was the only person who I’d say I’m already adjusted to – such a magnetic presence and without twisting away from Smith’s style. HBC was decent but will need to see more. Colman, as expected was mostly very good but you could definitely tell she was adjusting to the role. I also have to say I did find her very expressive and mobile face slightly difficult to adjust to – I mean she probably gave away more obvious emotion in this episode alone than Foy did in the entirety of her tenure. Not that makes Colman worse, just that it was very whiplash inducing for now. Am sure I will acclimatise soon.

this was my biggest thought after episode 1, and I wonder if it’s something Colman will grow in to or if she’s just playing the Queen differently. I don’t remember ever seeing Foy smile like Colman did.

Colman is fantastic, and her chemistry with HBC is magnetic, but she doesn’t have an Emmy-winning episode.
Menzies is the MVP for me and he does have a winning episode.
Two main highlights for me: Princess Anne singing Starman and the whole Aberfan episode.

IMO, it’s the best season so far. This cast > the old cast

i havent seen this as it’s not available to me for a couple of hours so i dont know, but Colman nailed Ann Stuart so it’s surprising.
Do you think Colman and The Crown are among the front runners for Emmy?

I still think Olivia is winning the Emmy but the episodes I’ve seen so far made me confident that Aniston is taking the globe.

I suspect it is in part due to Colman’s interpretation cause she has made comments that the Queen is a hoot in private based on research. But it also could be part of a slight character arc she tries to give to Elizabeth over the season given how it develops.

This season is really hitting on Elizabeth is most effective at her role cause she does nothing, so she’s never the protagonist but instead most plots end up leading back to how the surrounding characters exploits affect her. I don’t know if this hurts her chances – Claire at least had the plot of having to figure out her marriage and how to become Queen, but since those are settled, all Colman is left with is making sure her household doesn’t break out of their cage.

I don’t think anyone will ever be able to top what Claire Foy did she became Queen Elizabeth. Olivia is great but it is hard to look at her and not think “hey that’s Olivia Colman”.

Well Claire has few peers who can equal her . It sounds like it’s not quite up to the quality of previous seasons.
I’ll find out in under an hour anyways.

It’s probably my favorite season so far because of episodes 2, 3 and 6 haven’t watched anymore yet though.

I wouldn’t disagree regarding the added burden of baggage – Foy came into this role as a relative unknown and could start on a blank slate. Colman has a very unenviable job of either copying her to a T (which seems soul crushing for any artist) or doing her own interpretation.

I bristle a bit at the Colman is doing Colman comments earlier in the thread because I think it’s lazy criticism and quite unfair eg Godmother is very different from her QEII.

It sounds like it’s not quite up to the quality of previous seasons.

I honestly can’t quite remember much of the previous seasons except the Beryl episode and Edward’s Nazi-friendliness reveal episode. But I find the episodes that to be a lot more engaging this season and I’m only half way through. May be due to there being a lot less whiny Philip.

For all that say Olivia is underwhelming, last scene of episode 3. Enough said. Case close

OMG YES TO THIS!!! I just finished episode 3 and Olivia was just…Perfection!!! I do have to agree that her material in the first 3 episodes was underwhelming but that last scene was something else. ‘Aberfan’ was a masterpiece of an episode and imo one of the best ones from the show. The performances are pretty much incredible and one of the best ensembles I’ve ever seen on tv. Out of three HBC is my MVP so far. Her performance in Episode 2 and her monologue in ‘Aberfan’ were absolutely mesmerizing. She’s definitely coming for that Emmy.

To me O’Connor is used only in the last episodes to build momentum for next season. Which is the season everyone wants to see. He could go supporting or guest either fits.

I think the reason Colman feels underwhelming (she isn’t) is because she has less to do than Foy. While the first two seasons were about Foy, these one has narratives for many characters which makes Colman less present. But to say she doesn’t have a winning episode I think episode 3 could be her episode.

Also, Jane Lapotaire should be submitted for guest for Episode 4. She was great. I had no idea the history of her character
