Quick question, I have never seen The Crown and don’t have the time nor desire to catch up on the first 3 seasons. Do you think it’s possible to jump into Season 4 if I watch a few recaps?

In paper you always can, but you’ll miss so much.

You’d probably be ok, but I would watch at least Season 3 beforehand

Watching the recap reminded me of all the terrible snubs at the Emmys. I’m so sorry, Tobias Menzies, Josh O’Connor, Jane Lapotaire and Charles Dance.

Thank you all for your responses! I think I will watch seasons 3 and 4 and depending on how much I like it, I might go back and watch seasons 1 and 2.

If you’ve only got time for one season, I’d make it Season 2. Claire Foy should not be missed.

Now that ep. 1 is officially out. I just want to note that I found Josh O’Connor — who I thought was great but not spectacular in S3 — to be absolutely terrific. That scene between him and Menzies (who is also terrific) was exceptional. Emma Corrin boasts immediate confidence when she walks onscreen, which is an accomplishment given the role she is playing. The cinematography and editing, too, were mind-blowing. The only aspect that continues to (slightly) bother me is the score; it is miles below that of seasons 1 and 2.

I absolutely loved the first episode. It’s probably the best first episode the show has ever done and I say this as someone who loves Wolferton Splash.

That explosion scene was fantastically edited. And I agree with Luca regarding THAT scene between Phillip and Charles. Tobias Menzies is so severely underused in the show I keep forgetting how good he is in this role. I know there are meatier episodes coming along, but Josh O’Connor was perfection in this episode and this would be a great Emmy tape for him. What’s to say about Emma Corrin that hasn’t been said already on this thread by so many others. She is a real scene-stealer and has a charming on-screen presence. She nails Diana’s naivete. Not sold on Gillian Anderson yet, although I’m sure she’ll make me a fan in no time. I thought I was going to pace myself but onto the next one I go.

Just finished the first two and episodes and holyyyyy shit. The added cast of Emma and Gillian have REALLY elevated this season already. Obviously everyone is talking about Gillian and how great she is, which she is definitely. She was great in episode 2. Also i really like her dynamic with her husband its so cute haha. But i am sooo (most) happy with how great Emma is portraying Diana. WOW. Just the way she gives off that charm and portrays why ppl found her so captivating, her innocence so far. Her mannerisms and the way she’s portraying Diana is just as impressive if not more than Gillian as Thatcher (unpopular opinion probably). I’m not entirely 100% in awe of Gillian’s impression of Thatcher the way i am when Emma comes on screen. She completely steals the scenes she appears in i’m sorry. I know Gillian already has an army of loyal fans and she’ll get more praise for her performance, but i just hope Emma gains a new fanbase too and doesn’t get overshadowed. Also we’re seeing more of Princess Anne which is always a plus. I can’t wait for the character growth of Diana as the season goes on. I think her and Thatcher are going to provide such a great insight as to how more normal people would respond or feel against the royals. For far too long the show has always been centred on the royals as the protagonists. This season seems like such a refreshing chanhes. It is already shaping up to me my favourite season ever.

2 episodes in and I’m hooked. Everyone is bringing their A game, cast and the brilliant production team. Beautifully shot and acted.

As annoyed as I was that the eps didn’t drop at midnight UK time, I actually think 8am on a Sunday works in the shows favour. Especially as we’re back in lockdown. Both #TheCrown and #GillianAnderson have been trending on twitter all morning. I expect this season will have excellent viewing figures, pulling back faithful fans but also new viewers who will dip straight into S4.

The first 2 episodes of the official podcast also dropped this morning for anyone who is interested.
