Oh here we go again with people saying that others with different opinions just “don’t understand”. Would love an injection of that level of self confidence. If I may expand upon my intellectually lacking thoughts just once more what I’d also add is that I don’t think Colman is bad by any stretch. She’s just unsuited to the role, mostly due to the lack of neutrality in her performance style, and that is always going to restrict her.

If that’s how you see it, then that’s it for you.  “Nothing one can do about it. One [We] just has [have] to get on with it.”

Dears this is worse than I expected, Olivia is severely done! I thought maybe she was a threat to sweep based on that amazing trailer for Season 4, but once again she disappointed us all! I wish the best to her fans, I really hope they have peace, they need to be strong during this season, but I think it’s time we face the facts: The Favourite was a fluke! I can’t say I’m surprised about this, I’m just shocked she couldn’t fool the industry for longer than 1 year!

she’ll make it up to us with her powerful turn in The Father

Hardly. Go check her out in Broadchurch or Tyrannosaur. She’s even great in The Lobster. And has been earning raves for The Father.

I wonder to what degree audience and critic reaction will be influenced by familiarity with Thatcher, Diana, and the 1980s in general. I think someone mentioned earlier in the thread that at least one reviewer was critical because The Crown’s portrayal didn’t match their memory of the event?

Unlike the time period covered in previous seasons, more people remember the 1980s and have strong opinions on Diana and Thatcher. I also wonder if there will be any divergence in UK and US audience reaction. I can only speak for myself, but as an American, I know much more about Diana than I do Thatcher. (I know Thatcher was conservative and divisive, but I don’t know the nitty gritty of her tenure). So, I don’t have as much of a built-in opinion on Thatcher as lots of UK viewers probably do.

One thing I will say is I’ve seen many qualitative comparisons between The Crown season 4 and Mad Men season 4 in reviews and the acclaim I’ve seen for the Fagan episode is reminding me of the acclaim for The Suitcase. I also think with it having settled for now at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes (its highest rating of any season on there) and from looking at the reviews that this season has shifted the show from being the show that was respected to the show that is loved by critics and I think this will help it awards wise with places its struggled to win Series at (Emmys, BAFTA, CC). One review struck me in how it said that the idea of The Crown being a prestige bore is one that is overcome this season and that it becomes less of a glossy depiction of the Royal Family and is more focused on an arc (although the reviewer admitted it was not as focused as season 2 was but it was more arc focused than seasons 1 and 3).

It’s kind of funny how the show seems to only have like one review that isn’t good or a rave for its faster paced and soapier season lol and it’s from someone who seems to have liked season 3 a lot more than everyone else.

In terms of the supporting actress race I’d say at the moment one of Anderson and Corrin will win (you’re kidding yourselves if you’re definitively saying who will win or that one of them has no chance whilst the other does) but at the moment I’m predicting:

    Globe: Corrin (RU: Anderson)
    CC: Julia Garner
    SAG: Anderson
    BAFTA: Corrin
Emmy: Anderson (but it’s close between her and Corrin)

I think they will vote-split though if The Gilded Age arrives on time (which is 50/50 but it could eat into) and ends up actually being good or if Ozark somehow returns (although I think that’s unlikely right now).

Turns out I was right about The Balmoral Test being The Crown‘s answer to Hunting.

If you think the Roys play a mean game of Boar on the Floor, wait until you see the Royals!

Also I found these reviews to be very interesting.

Much of series three felt like a warm up act, a prelude to bigger, better drama. With the arrival of some new blood in the form of Gillian Anderson’s Thatcher and Emma Corrin’s Princess Diana, round four provides just that.

    Evening Standard

I remember in detail almost every event here that I found it so entertaining. Yes, there is a shaky start and the odd historical inaccuracy, but it is in my view Morgan’s best series yet and, overall, five-star television.

    The Times (UK)

Many actresses have essayed Mrs Thatcher, but her biographer Charles Moore is surely correct in his assertion that Gillian Anderson’s performance here is the most convincing yet.

    The Arts Desk

The score of season 4 has now gone up to 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Not surprising, Corrin seems like the clear mvp

As expected, there don’t seem to be a favorite between Anderson and Corrin.

think Gillian is going to take it.

These are all from the same page of this thread…

There doesn’t seem to be anyone else right now apart from The Morning Show dudes but considering it looks like Carell is going supporting it looks like they are poised to hace a three way vote-split so even if The Crown isn’t the Series frontrunner I still think he’s the frontrunner.

What is interesting is that Anderson and Colman are being paired in campaigning and interviews (they will be on Colbert this week I believe) and obviously Corrin and O’Connor are being paired in campaigning. Obviously not saying this definitely will happen but I wonder if O’Connor can win without Corrin or Colman can win without Anderson.

The thought of Steve Carell ever winning for The Morning Show is not one I want to entertain

What should be worth mentioning in relation to how seriously we take that BBC guys critique about Anderson and praise for Corrin is that he reviewed The Morning Show s1 and said Carell was the MVP of The Morning Show

…obviously doesn’t mean anything but lol.

Yeah no that BBC reviewer is awful. He just happens to be bang on about Colman but I’m not taking anything else he says on board.

Lol I absolutely agree with him on Colman (I’m not a Colman hater considering how I more or less think she’s absolutely phenomenal in everything else but like you said she was a bit disappointing considering who she was following).

But like what he said about Anderson. I-

I mean I’m not disputing her performance won’t be for everyone considering who she’s playing which is a given but it is scientifically impossible for Gillian Anderson to be unwatchable in anything.

Considering his record I’m not taking him seriously.

    Hi Guyss,

I just spent like half an hour reading the whole forum haha. I first watched The Crown after season 2. I had no idea it would go on to become one of my favourite shows of all time. I’ve been OBSESSED with the show ever since. I can’t waitttt for season 4. I’m most excited to see Emma play Diana i really think it’s gonna be something special. One question though, does anyone know what time the new series will get released on netflix UK time?? i want to watch it as soon as its out omg.
