“The Great is a satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. With only occasional historical facts the series stars Elle Fanning as Catherine, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.”
ReplyApril 23, 2020 at 3:06 pm #1203444226I’m excited. It’s from Tony McNamara, who also wrote the script for The Favorite, and that is one of my favorite scripts (still a travesty Green Book won Original Screenplay over it), and Elle Fanning is great too.

ReplyCopy URLApril 24, 2020 at 1:28 am #1203444936This looks promising, if it has the backing of critics it can be a player. I would say it’s the most likely candidate for comedy Hulu has ever had.

ReplyCopy URLMay 2, 2020 at 4:48 pm #1203459483Is this contending for Comedy or Drama? It could do great in a relatively barren comedy field.
ReplyCopy URLMay 2, 2020 at 6:49 pm #1203459607Forgot that the embargo lifted yesterday. I watched the pilot a month ago. If you loved The Favourite, this is the show for you. It is just The Favourite: The Series, which you could say is a little lazy, but then again, if you have a unique talent like that, why not give the people what they want? It is not like there is another outlet to get your fix for that. Not having been a fan of The Favourite myself, I was tempted to give up in the middle of the episode, but it won me over by the end and I could see the potential for a series there. I obviously did not rush to watch more, but I will return if I have the time and sooner rather than later if it really picks up in reviews and Emmy buzz.
What struck me was how vulnerable the show is of getting shipped to drama. I really thought that this was just Catherine the Great by way of Dickinson. I have never seen Dickinson, but what I mean is that I expected a light show about the empress depicted as a frivolous teenager. What I found so compelling though toward the end of the pilot was how it was able to set up several seasons of epic drama built on power dynamics and associated political intrigue. It is the drama and not the comedy that has stuck with me, albeit this is not my style of comedy as mentioned. The run time is also a hard hour, as opposed to forty minutes or anything close to half an hour like that. Finally, a lot of people get really squeamish about depictions of violence against animals for some reason and there is a major act of senseless violence against an animal late in the episode that could yield an automatic fail vote for the appeal to move to comedy if any such people are on the board that makes these decisions. We will know for sure when Chris posts the Hulu submissions on Monday. The Great is still a comedy in the predictions centre, so it seems like the appeal was successful, which is weird after they rejected a teen sex comedy last year.

The Favourite is one of my favorites, so I’m super excited for this. Glad to hear you enjoyed it

ReplyCopy URLMay 9, 2020 at 12:42 am #1203472643I took out Run for this so this better not dissapoint. That MC score will be lower cause Indiewire gave it a C- which is equivalent to 42. The reason the critic didn’t like is because it’s too similar to The Favourite. That might be a good thing for a lot of the people though including me. The review also praises the performances of Fanning and Hoult.

I find it weird that as of now they still haven’t factored Indiewire’s review score of C- which will lower the score. I have it in series and lead actress though and might add Nicholas Hoult.
